In loving memory of Philip John Howland, who ended a hard-fought battle with cancer at the age of 72. Philip leaves behind his loving wife and best friend of 42 years, Jo-Ann (Loughry); his children, John, Sarah (Paul), and Andrea (Jeremy); and his granddaughter, Evelyn. He was pre-deceased by his parents Frederick and Marjorie (Doughty) Howland. A devoted brother to Peter, and brother-in-law to Norma, Philip was a loving uncle to Jennifer (Tugrul), and great uncle to Maya. With his marriage to Jo-Ann, he was lovingly brought into the Loughry family and is remembered with love by Mary-Ann Knowlton, Patricia Leeson, Margaret Laurano, and Michael Loughry. Pre-deceased by Robert Knowlton, Helen Loughry, Edward and Nancy Loughry, Christopher Loughry, Gary Lusby, Roger Laurano, and Cathy Loughry. He took great delight in being an uncle, a great uncle, and even a great-great uncle to many.
Philip was born in Canterbury, England and grew up in Margate. He spent many formative years with his brother Peter, his cousins and friends, only marginally staying out of trouble. He was a member of the Honourable Artillery Company (HAC) from 1974 – 1977. He moved to Canada in 1978 to further his career at what was then, GEC. While the name changed many times, Philip remained with the same company for 44 years, ending with MAN Diesel & Turbo Canada when he retired in 2016.
During this time, Philip was an engaged and active member of his community. He joined the Royal Canadian Sea Cadets when he first came to Canada; was a long-time Scout and Venturer leader while his children were members of Scouts Canada; and volunteered for many years with Canadian Food for Children. His longest and most cherished contributions, however, were to the Parish of St. Francis Xavier Church, of which he was a member from its founding in 1987. Philip was a member of the Parish council for many years and served as Chairperson on the building committee for what is now the St. Francis Xavier Church on Mavis Road. Through the church he joined the Knights of Columbus and the St. Andre Bessette Assembly and very much treasured the relationships built within the brotherhood.
To the St. Francis Xavier community, the family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude for their prayers and support throughout this journey. The family would also like to acknowledge with deep appreciation the incredible care provided by the staff at the Oncology clinic at the Queensway Health Centre, as well as Dr. Hamza Mahmood, Dr. Elan Panov, Dr. Milan Patel, Dr. Anthony Hung, and his long-time family doctor Dr. Rosemary Van Straalen. Many thanks as well to Queenie Hung and Spectrum Healthcare.
A celebration of life and a Holy Mass will be held on Thursday, August 28th 2025 at 11:00 AM at St. Francis Xavier Church. Prior to the mass the family will greet friends and family. In lieu of flowers, donations in Philip’s memory may be made to Canadian Food for Children, the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul – St. Francis Xavier Parish, or Pancreatic Cancer Canada.
