It is with great sadness that the family of Dr. Keith Stanley Augustine Henry announce his sudden and
unexpected passing at the age of 89 years. Loving husband of Cynthia Henry, father to Richard (Shirley)
and Pauline (Branko), and grandfather to Garrison, Chevonne and Aleksandar. Keith will be dearly
missed by his family, friends and neighbours. He will be remembered fondly as a proud alumnus of
Queen’s Royal College (QRC) which provided many of his cherished memories and stories, resulted in
lifelong friends, and launched an insatiable thirst for learning and knowledge.
Keith was born in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago to Leon Marshall and Helena Henry. He attended
QRC from 1947 to 1955. He excelled in his studies and earned a prestigious Island Scholarship enabling
him to attend Cambridge University, England (Magdalene College, 1956-1961) to pursue a Bachelor of
Arts degree and a Certificate of Education. He returned to Trinidad to teach at St. George’s College where
he met his adored Cynthia whom he married in 1964. They eventually moved together to Deep River,
Ontario where Keith taught high school before enrolling at the University of Toronto for Doctoral Studies
in Political Economy. He became a Professor of African American Studies at the University of Buffalo,
State University of New York in 1974 where he then spent over 30 years teaching and publishing
scholarly articles. Since retiring in 2007, continued learning was his enduring purpose through books
and periodicals, and an enjoyment of art, music, theatre, sport and especially travelling. He never
stopped satisfying his passion for a wide breadth of stimulating intellectual topics and conversation, and
imparting his knowledge and wisdom to his children, grandchildren and friends.
Keith led a full life; he undoubtedly had much left on his to-do and to-see list. We honour and celebrate
a man with a sharp mind who was conscientious, personable, kind to those around him, always
demonstrated integrity, had a hearty laugh, could be both funny and serious, and appreciated both the
big and small moments in life. May he rest in peace after a life so well-lived.
Cremation has taken place. A Celebration of Life will be held at Turner & Porter 'Peel' Chapel
