John Douglas Reid
July 3, 1939 - July 28, 2015
Loving husband of 49 years to Helen Frances Carbert. Dear father of John Edward Reid of Mississauga and Douglas Charles Reid (Alston) of Richmond, Virginia. Loving grandfather of Jackson and Davis Reid. Beloved brother of David Reid (Pat), brother-in-law of Jack (Deanna) and kind uncle of Janis, Bob, Paul, Michael and Anne. John was a very giving person who dedicated his time to encouraging his children in skiing, football, baseball and swimming, as well as in school. He gave his family rich experiences by travelling extensively across North America and around the world. In the late 1970s he constructed a cottage next to the one his father built on Chandos Lake near Apsley, Ontario, in the Kawarthas. The family has spent many wonderful summers on the lake and it is a gift for future generations. John was formerly a Geography and Geology Teacher at Glenforest Secondary School in Mississauga. Over the years he coached many football and basketball teams in the school system. After retiring from teaching in the early 1990s he joined the Teachers Life Insurance Society full time, where he went on to become President and Chief Executive. His last years of work with Teacher’s Life were among the most fulfilling in his career. He helped to shape the future of the organization with his leadership abilities, which was recognized with the company’s building being named in his honour in June 2006. With his warmth and goodness he had a tremendous number of enduring friendships, which was demonstrated by so many people who celebrated good times with him, kept in touch and visited him at home. He will always be remembered. Friends may call at the Turner & Porter “Neweduk-Erin Mills” Chapel, 1981 Dundas St. W., Mississauga (just east of Erin Mills Pkwy.), on Thursday, July 30, 2015 from 6-8 p.m. Funeral service will be held in the chapel on Friday, July 31, 2015 at 11 a.m., with a reception to follow. Memorial contributions may be made to the Trillium Health Partners Foundation in Mississauga or the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health.
