CORMIER, BRIAN PETER (P. Eng)~
Peacefully on December 17, 2015 at the age of 79 at St. Joseph’s Health Centre, Toronto after a 7 month battle with cancer. Born in Montreal, Quebec, son of the late Doreen (O'Brien) and Edgar Cormier. Brian grew up in Springhill, Nova Scotia.
Brian was a Graduate of St. Francis Xavier University where he received his engineering diploma in 1959. He then went on to Dalhousie University (formerly Nova Scotia Tech), where he received his Metallurgical Engineering degree in 1962. As a way to fund his education, Brian worked above ground at the Springhill Mine, and when the opportunity presented itself to go below ground, he accepted the challenge, knowing this would earn him more money. Never afraid of hard work, and after his first full year at university, he hitchhiked his way to Labrador, and worked in the fly-infested woods, often describing his experience as one he would never forget. After graduation, he accepted a position as manager with Alcan in Montreal, QC, and following a few years there, he moved to Toronto and accepted a managerial position in the Metallurgical Engineering Department at IBM Canada. He retired in 1991, after a 25 year career with IBM.

Brian was involved with the sport of baseball from age 8 and became a long-time volunteer in the sport as the President of Martingrove Baseball, and Vice-President of Etobicoke Baseball Association. He received recognition from EBA for “Lifetime of Excellence Volunteer Award” in 2006. He also was extensively involved with volunteering at Father Serra Catholic School.
An avid reader and lover of music and debating, he would often be found sitting on the front porch of his home with a stack of books, a glass of red wine, and soft music playing in the background.
Beloved husband to Shirley (Pellerin) Cormier, formerly of Nova Scotia, loving father of Nicole and Jean-Paul Cormier and a cherished grandfather to Riley (a.k.a Cassandra), he is also survived by sister Sandra (late Avon), Boutilier’s Point, Nova Scotia; Frances (Joe) Marini, Toronto; a niece and several nephews.

Visitation will be at the Turner & Porter Yorke Chapel, 2357 Bloor St. W., at Windermere, east of the Jane Subway, on Sunday, January 3, 2016 from 2 – 4 & 7 – 9 p.m. Funeral Mass will be held at St. Gregory’s Catholic Church, 122 Rathburn Rd., Etobicoke, on Monday, January 4, 2016 at 10 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.
