Alfred Devenish
May 2, 1920 - December 30, 2013
May 2, 1920 - December 29, 2013
At Humber River Memorial Hospital with his family by his side on Monday, December 29th, 2013. Loving husband of Susan (nee Gainher) for 52 years. Cherished father of Franci (Ian), Mark (Ginny), and Carla (Danny). Proud grandfather of Adam, Kelly, Whitney, Cameron, Sean, Paul, Lilianna, Sasha and Gabriel. Blessed by great-grandchildren Morgan, Cohen, Parker, Taylor and Everett. Predeceased by his dear son Rodney (Jackie).
Independent, debonair, a true gentleman to the end, he leaves a life well lived with achievements in Air Canada, Silver Fox Antiques and his retirement hobby of woodcarving. Born in Lachine, Quebec, he grew up in Montreal where he was trained with the 17th Duke of York for his military service but due to a bout of Pleurisy in childhood he had to retire and this began his career with Air Canada in 1942 moving to Halifax on Water Street. He designed the offices at Eastern Control in Halifax and became the Station Manager for one and a half years before he got into Cargo Load Dispatch and moved back to Montreal. It was noted he was never one to take anything sitting down! In Montreal he was in Senior Management in Cargo with Air Canada. In 1970 he was transferred with Air Canada to London, England where he had a rich life full of further travel, cargo accomplishments and many happy times with friends and family. He also continued and nurtured his interest for antiques spending many enjoyable hours at auctions adding to a growing collection of treasures. He was with Air Canada for 35 years. Upon retirement he settled in Toronto, Canada and began silver Fox Antiques with his wife Susan on Bloor Street, the Kingsway. They enjoyed a flourishing business and made many more friends along the way. Alf and Susan loved to entertain and have many fond memories of these gatherings. It has been said that Alf was a brilliant man ahead of his time. Friends may call at the Turner & Porter Yorke Chapel, 2357 Bloor St. W., at Windermere, east of the Jane Subway, on Saturday, January 4, 2014 from 2 p.m. until the time of the Funeral Service in the Chapel at 3 p.m.
