After a short illness due to complications from pneumonia, our cherished mother Regina died on Saturday, January 25, 2025 at Cummer Lodge, aged 91. She resided there on the 4 North unit for almost 8 years. Until recently, she was in good health - able to walk independently, eat well, attended outings and the company of others almost into her 90th year. Regina lived a life with many challenges, coming to Canada in 1952 at age 19 from Rossdorf, West Germany, where she grew up, then met our father Mike Galetski. They married in Saskatchewan, where our paternal grandfather settled earlier from Ukraine. Soon after the birth of their eldest child, they moved to Toronto, where two more children came along. We were raised in the High Park area where she joined St. Joan of Arc Roman Catholic Church and remained a loyal parishioner most of her adult life. She was also an active member of the Catholic Women's League there for over 40 years. At times, she worked as a waitress, receptionist and order desk clerk while raising her children. After her divorce, she married Frank (Francis) Cairns. They traveled & happily spent much time together until his death in 2000. Later, diagnosed with dementia, she entered Cummer Lodge for the final phase of her life.
Regina was an energetic, generous, devoted, loyal and a curious person. She worked hard, held fast to her convictions and spent much time with her extended family and friends, both in Canada and back home. Her children kept her close throughout, sharing many precious moments and special events, staying involved in her day-to-day life.
We offer our sincere thanks with true regard to the staff at Cummer Lodge, with special gratitude to all who worked directly with our mother on 4N. Donations in her honour can be made to Evangeline Residence (Salvation Army), 2808 Dundas St. W. Toronto, ON M6P IY5.
