It is with heavy hearts and cherished memories that we announce the passing of Penny Maureen Bonita MItanis McCarney a beloved wife, mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, sister, sister-in-law, aunt & friend. Penny passed away surrounded by love, just weeks after playing a round of golf, a true reflection to her lifelong vitality and spirit.
Penny was born in Vancouver to Nora and John Mitanis, followed 18 months later by her sister Carole (Roy Dotto)—her first and dearest friend. The family eventually settled in Toronto where the family opened a restaurant. Watching her parents work together shaped Penny’s work ethic, generosity and warmth, qualities that would define her life.
Penny was a proud graduate of St. Joseph’s High School and St. Joseph’s Nursing School (1959), where she formed lifelong friendships and began a career devoted to caring for others. After raising her daughters, she returned to nursing through a refresher program and went on to work in mental health at St. Joseph’s, offering care marked by gentle strength, deep integrity, and boundless compassion.
She met the love of her life, Finley McCarney, on a blind date—one that blossomed into a 65-year love story they affectionately called “Forever Yours.” They began their life together in Parry Sound, where Finley launched his career as a Chartered Accountant and they started their family. Eventually, they settled in Mississauga, building a life full of faith, laughter, and adventure. Penny and Finley traveled the world, shared countless passions (bridge, golf, reading, entertaining and so many more) and were active members of the St. Francis of Assisi community.
Penny’s greatest pride and joy was her family. Penny was the proud and loving mother of Carolynn McCarney-Perkins (Mick), Lisa McCarney (John Warus), Patti Grange (Jeffrey) and Susan Marcus (Jon). She was a deeply adored Grandmother to her treasured grandchildren: Justin, Matthew, Harrison and Aidan Grange; Benjamin, Adeleine and Grace Perkins; Lauren and Finley Marcus; and Ryan and Alyssa Warus and great grandchild Lucas.
One of Penny’s great joys was to have gained another life long confidant, her sister-in-law Lynne Murphy..Penny was a devoted Aunt to many loved nieces and nephews along with a wide circle of extended family and lifelong friends who will miss her profoundly.
Penny’s friendships were central to her life. She always said “dear friends make the hard times easier and the good times better”. She loved deeply, lived authentically and always offered a hand to those in need. Her door was always open, her kitchen always warm, and her garden always blooming.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Nora (Matthews) and John Mitanis; her beloved in-laws, Mary-Kate and Ted McCarney; brother-in-laws (Dr.Warren Hoffman & William Murphy), and several dear friends.
To know Penny was to be wrapped in love. She lived with purpose, served with joy, and loved with her whole heart.
