It is with deep sadness that we share the passing of Nicolaos “Nikos” Mplias, a devoted husband, father and grandfather, on February 10th, 2026 at the age of 86.
Nikos is survived by his beloved wife of nearly 58 years, Antonia, his children Diane and John (Christina) and is predeceased by his dear daughter Vicki (Sam). He was a proud Papou to five cherished grandchildren: Selena, Jenna, Nicole, Chrisanthi and Eleias. He will be greatly missed by his extended family and countless friends.
Nikos was born January 3rd, 1940 to Yiannis and Despina in the village of Agkaryones on the island of Limnos, Greece. Nikos lived through the hardships of World War II and the Greek Civil War that followed. These early struggles, like for many Greeks of his time, forged in him a resilient spirit. A man of responsibility and duty, he left his small agrarian village at the young age of fourteen and worked on ships that sailed through the Mediterranean, around the continent of Africa and travelled as far as India to ensure he could send money to his parents and his four younger siblings.
After many years of working on ships and also as a sponge diver, Nikos yearned for a stable life and emigrated to Canada where he married Antonia on March 3rd, 1968. Together they built a life rooted in love, faith, and strong family values. With support of his family top of mind, Nikos had trained at George Brown College to build his technical skills and eventually founded his own plumbing business, Nick’s Mechanicals that he ran with pride over many years.
Nikos had a larger than life personality. His home was often the hub of many parties, get-togethers and barbecues and it was filled with laughter from his effortless ability to tell a great story. He had countless friends from around the world he met on his travels to South America, Cuba, Portugal, Spain and his birth country, Greece. Although travels took him to many places, and he kept his roots close to his heart, he was undeniably a staunch Canadian, and embraced its lifestyle. A favourite past-time over many years was to enjoy the simple pleasure of camping with his family in Ontario and sometimes in Cape Cod, cooking up big bacon and egg breakfasts for anyone that wanted to join his table.
As his children grew and married, soon came grandchildren. Nikos was a hands-on grandfather and attended any event his grandchildren were a part of, whether acro, soccer, gymnastics, school plays, Greek dancing performances or skiing all with a camera in tow, proudly capturing every moment.
Nikos’s life was marked by many joyful experiences and cherished moments. Yet, like any life, it was not without hardship. He and his family faced the profound challenge of his dear daughter Vicki’s battle with breast cancer, and they were deeply affected by her passing a year ago. Over the past decade, Nikos also endured significant physical challenges due to paralysis, requiring full-time care. With remarkable strength and devotion, his wife Antonia tirelessly cared for him alongside numerous dedicated personal support workers. Antonia was able to honour his wish to remain in the comfort of his home until his final days.
Family and friends are invited to commemorate and honour the legacy Nikos leaves behind. May he rest in peace and may his memory be eternal.
In lieu of flowers, kindly consider donating to the Canadian Cancer Society in memory of Nikos Mplias.
