With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Katherine Hladkyj on February 23, 2025, in Toronto at the age of 81. Katherine was born in Przemyśl, Poland, where she grew up with an incredible work ethic, helping on her family’s farm. In her early twenties, she courageously journeyed to Canada to marry her beloved husband, the late Jaroslaw Hladkyj (1926–2005), and build a new life devoted to family, faith, and heritage.
Katherine was a deeply loving mother, grandmother, and friend. She leaves behind her son Andrij and granddaughter Leah, her daughter Maria and son-in-law Harry, and her grandsons Thomas and Lucas. She was a dedicated and selfless matriarch, always working tirelessly to support and nurture her family.
Her Ukrainian heritage was at the heart of everything she did. A devout Ukrainian Catholic, Katherine took immense pride in passing down traditions, especially through her extraordinary cooking. She skillfully prepared every Ukrainian dish, and in past years, she went all out for Ukrainian Christmas, preparing all 12 traditional courses with care and devotion. She also had a deep passion for gardening, tending to her plants with the same patience and warmth that she showed her loved ones.
Katherine’s kindness, strength, and unwavering love will remain in our hearts forever.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her memory to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
