Joseph Fevrier was born on the 22nd May 1934, in the tranquil village of Mon Repos, Micoud. The name of his birthplace is loosely translated as “place of rest” and it was there that the young Joseph would grow up while receiving his early instruction and education at home and at school. A man of peace and one, who would give rest to others, would later become the hallmarks of the life of Joseph Fevrier.
Ever ready to contribute and be part of whatever it was that his family was doing, Joseph spent much of his youthful days with his father working in agriculture where his family focused on timber harvesting and animal husbandry on Minee Estate.
However, coming from an agriculture based family, which some would frown upon, Joseph was undaunted and used the discipline he learned and a desire to want more, to expand his horizons and make a better life for himself. And so he migrated to London in 1956 with the first wave of West Indians to move to England. It was there that he later got immersed in the Baptist faith, with a strong desire for theology and further spiritual growth and development.
Joseph Fevrier would enroll and attend seminary school at Barry Bible College in South Wales where he took his religious instruction, later receiving his calling to become a Minister of Religion. He returned to St. Lucia in 1967 as a missionary and was called to serve at Grace Baptist Church in Bexon. At the time of his calling he was assistant pastor at the East London Tabernacle in London, UK.
After a successful stint in Bexon, where he served not only as spiritual leader but championed community outreach programs, he took up a new mission at the First Baptist Church in Castries where he dutifully served from 1975 until his retirement in 2001. Under the leadership of Joseph Fevrier, “the reformed faith” prevailed and a number of young men came to embrace the doctrines of grace –albeit after riding some rough seas in the process. But in the end, Fevrier’s patience and resilience would only serve to make those he tutored and mentored stronger.
Besides spiritual growth, Joseph Fevrier also saw a good education as key to the development of an individual and was instrumental in helping with the establishment of a pre-school and primary school in Bexon, as well as the Saint Lucia school of theology.
Pastor Fevrier as he was now called, has been deeply involved in the life of the church and the greater community at large. Beyond the pulpit, he was one of the first to use the print and broadcast medium to spread the teachings of God and offer hope to the downtrodden.
His voice was heard on most mornings on Radio Caribbean from 1973 with one of the first daily patois programs – the Grace Baptist Hour. Later, on Sunday mornings, he was seen on HTS with another spiritual program from the station’s inception until 2000.
He was also a constant fixture at the Victoria hospital and at the bedsides of the sick and shut in – regardless of the day or hour. He also had a dedicated prison ministry where he counseled and instructed those who had fallen afoul of the law. He was a pastor to all, regardless of their official religious affiliation – a confidant and listening ear in times of both joy and sorrow.
On his retirement from the First Baptist Church in St. Lucia in 2001, Pastor Fevrier moved to Toronto, Canada and became the Chaplin and a number of nursing homes in Mississauga, Ontario. He would hold weekly services at each of those institutions, and provided a listening ear, prayer and any pastoral care that may have been needed. He provided this ministry until the beginning of Covid 19 in March 2020.
Pastor Joseph Fevrier was known for his erudite council and served on many religious and secular boards including the Prerogative of Mercy and the Association of Bible Believing Churches in Saint Lucia. He was also a member of the Prison board, a chaplain of Parliament and the consummate volunteer with many other groups.
He was always the peacemaker and wise sage. Personally, he loved world affairs and would be seen listening to the BBC or watching CNN in his spare time.
He loved his wife, Belinda, which is a love story for the ages. The two of them were never far apart and completed each other at every level. As in live, in death, they were inseparable - a mere seven months before they were reunited in Glory.
His legacy will live on as a shining example of what a true Christian should be. He exemplified love and what it meant to Love thy neighbour.
We shall meet again.
