Jean passed away peacefully at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, Toronto on Tuesday, January 27, 2026 at the age of 93, surrounded by loved ones. Jean is survived by Walter, her partner of 45 years; her children, Stuart and Iain; grandchildren Andrew, Jonathan, Margaret, Anna and John, Walter’s daughter Lesley (Gene) and extended family.
Jean was born and raised in Wishaw, Scotland, by parents James and Isabella, along with her older sister Isobel; and younger brother Stuart. There were many family outings to the countryside and the coasts where she developed her love of nature and enthusiasm for life. She began working at John Williams (Wishaw) Limited at 14 years of age and worked steadily until her retirement in 1997 after 21 years with the North York Board of Education.
Jean (with then husband John) moved to Canada in 1957, and became a Canadian citizen shortly thereafter. She never lost her love for Scotland and returned frequently to visit family and pass on her love of Scotland to her children and later to Walter. She had many special memories from visits to the Scottish coast and highlands with Walter and her relatives.
Jean also loved Muskoka and managed her career to spend summers at the family cottage, generously inviting friends to stay and making some of her favourite memories there with her friend of 65 years, Shirley and her family.
Dedicated to learning, Jean obtained her Bachelor of Arts (English) degree from York University in 1993, taking night school classes while working full time. After retiring, Jean and Walter managed extended winter stays in the Bahamas and then in Longboat key. In both places, they met and became lifelong friends with many of the people they met. Jean loved music and dancing and was always open to a glass of wine.
Jean was a loving mother, grandmother and partner, always supportive and happy to lend a hand. She was well read and had her opinions on important matters to the end.
Private family arrangements have taken place.
In memory of Jean, donations may be made to Sunnybrook Foundation (the Stroke Prevention Clinic in particular).
