James “Jim” V. Soda passed away peacefully on March 13, 2026, at Trillium Health Partners in Mississauga at the age of 90.
Jim was born in Windsor, Ontario, and grew up in a large family alongside his sisters Rose, Agnes, and Theresa, and his brothers Dominic and Fred. He was predeceased by his sister Maria and his brother Anthony.
Like many young men of his era, Jim worked a variety of jobs in his early years before discovering the career that would define much of his working life. He joined EllisDon, where his intelligence, determination, and strong work ethic allowed him to steadily work his way up through the ranks. His career took him too many places across Canada and the United States, working on numerous large construction projects. His expertise included large hospitals and water treatment plants. He travelled extensively before eventually settling in Mississauga, where he lived for many years. Jim retired several years ago as a Project Superintendent after a long and respected career.
Jim is lovingly remembered by his wife, Sandra (Sandy), with whom he shared 37 years of marriage, companionship, and travel. He was a proud father to his four children: Jimmy, Lisa (Ben), Dina (Gary) and Francesca (Brian). While his work often kept him away from home during their younger years, he loved his children deeply and took great pride in the people they became.
Jim leaves behind one grandchild, Michael (Courtney) and two great-grandchildren, Jackson and Thomas, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, godchildren, friends, and former colleagues who will remember him with affection.
Those who knew Jim recognized his sharp mind and exceptional eye for detail. He had a natural talent for problem-solving, something that served him well throughout his career and daily life.
Jim could be quick-tempered from time to time, but his frustrations passed as quickly as they came—once something was said, the matter was finished. His dry wit and straightforward manner were part of his character, and those close to him appreciated both his humour and his honesty.
Jim enjoyed many simple but meaningful pleasures. In his younger years he spent time woodworking, and throughout his life he took pride in maintaining his home and yard. He was an avid reader of historical non-fiction and always appreciated learning about the past. He was also fascinated by bridges, both their design and construction and had looked forward to crossing the new Gordie Howe International Bridge between Windsor and Detroit.
Summer often meant firing up the barbecue, something he genuinely enjoyed, especially when it brought family, friends, and good food together. One of his favourite meals was homemade spaghetti, and he rarely turned down a good dessert. From time to time, he also enjoyed relaxing with a good Scotch.
Above all, Jim valued family, hard work, and the quiet satisfaction of doing things properly. He lived a long life shaped by dedication, independence, and a practical approach to whatever challenge came his way. He will be remembered for his intelligence, his humour, and the many memories he leaves behind for those who knew and loved him.
