It is with deepest sadness that we announce that on April 23rd, 2025, while she was visiting family in Toronto, the Lord called Grace Lal to him. She leaves behind her dedicated and beloved husband of 55 years, Mohan, her cherished children Roman (Richa) and Anita who were a source of great pride, and her adored and adoring grandsons Rohan, Rithyk, and Elliot.
Born on December 19th, 1936 to Chacko Chacko and Theresa Ellichira in Arpookara, Kottayam, Kerala, India, she shared her youth with her sisters Mariamma (deceased), Ithamma, Emily, Rosamma, Leelamma, and her brother Joy (deceased). When the opportunity to study nursing in Koln, Germany at age 18 presented itself, she jumped at the chance. While there, she met and married Mohan Lal.
Her nursing career was extensive, working in Germany and Copenhagen before she and Mohan moved to Toronto in 1971. There she worked at St Joseph’s Health Centre - Our Lady of Mercy Wing for 27 years before moving to New Mexico and working there. She was known to be a dedicated and passionate nurse and friend. She had a happy disposition and an eagerness to help patients and colleagues alike; colleagues who remained cherished friends for many years after she and Mohan retired to Dallas, Texas.
Grace was very family-oriented and was happiest when her family were all together with her. She loved to have long phone conversations with her sisters. Her infectious smile drew people to her. A gentle soul, she was always kind, caring, and loving to everyone she befriended and was often described as having a big heart. Although she struggled with memory loss latterly, she still remembered and told stories of the past, and continued to be self-less, putting others before herself.
Grace particularly enjoyed gardening and cultivated many beautiful gardens wherever she lived. She loved travelling, and also the excitement of playing games of chance, taking the opportunity to visit casinos wherever she went. Taking care of her health was important to her and she religiously went to the gym where she could indulge in another joy, swimming. Baptised and raised in the Roman Catholic Church, she was devout in her faith. She will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by her loving family and friends.
