Erin Constance Layton lived a short life, but a full one. She was born on a magical date 8/8/88. Her parents could not have asked for a happier, more curious and active child. Erin’s developmental disability was determined in pre-school. Regardless, Erin enjoyed a rich education program in the public school system through to the age of 21.
Following school Erin was active in day programs offered by three non-profit organizations dedicated to supporting adults with developmental disabilities. Her parents were part of a small group that created the West Toronto KEYS to INclusion (KEYS) and Erin was one of the original enrollees. KEYS provides a rich program in support of inclusive community participation, social engagement and life skills. Erin also attended LUSO that focuses on the personal growth of individuals living with disabilities. Earlier Erin enjoyed several years of learning and life-skills provided by ADDUS.
Erin loved music and dancing. Her participation in singing and drama programs provided by DramaWay was always a highlight for her. She also enjoyed her many summers at Camp Kennebec. These programs, along with swimming and Special Olympics ensured a full, fun, and active life for Erin.
In the fall of 2020 Erin developed health issues that affected her coordination, strength, and her ability to swallow. Erin received superb care at the University Health Network’s (UHN) Movement Disorders Clinic and the Endoscopy & Gastroenterology Department at Humber River Hospital. She was hospitalized in April 2025 and with the need for breathing support it led to other complications. After three months in the Intensive Care Unit at Humber River Hospital, Erin passed away due to complications from lung disease.
Erin leaves behind her mother Carol Layton (Buchanan), and sister Beth Layton. She enjoyed family gatherings with her many aunts, uncles and cousins. Erin is pre-deceased by her father David Layton, her grandparents Connie Buchanan (Cooke) and Joe Buchanan, and Doris Layton (Steeves) and Robert Layton and her uncles Jack Layton and Michael Buchanan.
Erin was a social butterfly and as we said before loved music and dancing. With her passing she is no doubt dancing among the stars. A Celebration of Life for Erin will be organized and communicated in the coming weeks.
