Emilio Palermo passed away peacefully, leaving behind a century of memories, resilience, and quiet strength. Born on January 1, 1926, in Rende, Calabria, Italy, to Angelo Palermo and Adelina Caira, Emilio lived an extraordinary one hundred years, witnessing a world that changed in ways few could have imagined.
He was the beloved brother of Giovanni (Theresa) and Amalia (Dante), both predeceased, and is lovingly remembered by his ‘little’ sister Lina (Antonio). He was also a loving uncle and great uncle to many.
Emilio was a dedicated and hardworking man who spent his career with Lancione Construction, serving as a respected foreman well into his later years. He continued working until the age of 80, only stepping away after being diagnosed with prostate cancer. His work ethic was unmatched, and he approached every day with determination and purpose.
Above all else, Emilio was a family man. He was the proud father of Angelo, known to many as Frank, who predeceased him, and Giovanni (Valerie), affectionately known as Johnny. His greatest joy, however, was being a nonno to Alexandra (Dillan), Jordan, Christian, and Julian. In them, he found endless pride, love, and a legacy that will carry forward.
A man of few words, Emilio nonetheless had a gift for conversation. He loved to share stories of his youth in Italy, bringing the past to life with quiet passion. He had a deep curiosity about the world, often found reading anything he could get his hands on and always eager to learn something new. Even in his later years, he marvelled at modern technology, never quite getting over the wonder of being able to speak to loved ones across any distance through FaceTime or even taking a selfie.
Emilio lived independently and on his own terms for as long as possible. He lived with Johnny and his family until the age of 98, surrounded by love and support, and continued driving until the age of 95, reluctantly giving it up only when told he had lost his licence. He took great joy in sharing his age with others, often delighting in the disbelief and amazement on their faces when they learned just how many years he had lived.
He was not what many might consider the ‘typical older Italian’ man, and those who knew him understood why. Emilio was a partner in every sense of the word. He cooked, cleaned, washed dishes, and lovingly braided his wife’s hair when she was no longer able. He was a man of many talents, and it was clear he had to be, because Amelia would not have accepted anything less. A true social butterfly, she brought energy and connection to every room she entered, and Emilio met her as an equal, sharing in the responsibilities of their life together and supporting her in all the ways that mattered most. Even into his 80s, his dedication to his family never slowed. He would drive down from Wasaga Beach to cut Johnny’s lawn while he was at work and return home all in the same day, simply wanting to ease the load and take one more thing off his son’s plate.
Beyond his devotion to family, Emilio had a deep love for food. His appetite was legendary, and he could easily polish off two heaping plates of pasta and still have room for sweets, even well into his 90s. Meals were a joy and sharing them with others was one of his greatest pleasures.
Emilio’s life was not simply long, it was full. Full of hard work, quiet kindness, enduring love, and a steady presence that grounded those around him. To have lived one hundred years is remarkable, but to have lived them with such consistency, humility, and care is something truly special.
He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
We take comfort in imagining him now at peace, finally reunited with Amelia and Frank, and hopefully enjoying all of the chocolate dipped doughnuts he could ever want.
