Dr. Cho Yat Pang passed peacefully on Sunday January 4, 2026, surrounded by his family. Cho is survived by his beloved wife of 49 years, Bernice; his son, Christopher; and his daughter, Allison. He is also lovingly remembered by his siblings Cam (Daisy), George (Alan), and Yung (Fai); as well as by his many nieces, nephews, and dear friends. Much loved brother of the late Peter (Josephine) and Cathy (Derek) Pang.
Cho was born in Hong Kong and came to Canada to attend the University of Manitoba, where he obtained his PhD in the Department of Animal Science. There, he developed many life-long friends and met his wife. Cho then went on to complete post-doctoral studies at Yale University. He then started his career at University of Texas Southwestern before joining the Surgical Research Department at the Hospital for Sick Children. To those who knew Cho, he was a passionate and dedicated researcher who cared deeply for all those who worked with him. He spent 30 plus years in the world of plastic surgery research, having won many awards and grants, and helping establish the Surgeon-Scientist Program at the University of Toronto.
Cho was devoted to his family – his wife and children were an important part of his life. He enjoyed bringing them back to Hong Kong, showing and talking about his childhood memories. Cho also maintained fond memories of his time in Manitoba, as well as many family trips to Riding Mountain National Park and the Dauphin area. In his later years, Cho enjoyed taking rides through High Park and having coffee and sweets at nearby cafés. At the end of the day, he simply wanted to spend his time with his family by his side.
Cho was baptized later in life. Although quiet and reserved to some, he was a devout believer. He found a particular joy in music and listened to hymns in the car as he traveled between home and work. One could often hear him boldly singing along to these hymns he knew so well.
Cho will be remembered for his sense of humour and sharp wit. He will be remembered for his unparalleled work ethic and commitment to his family both in Toronto and Hong Kong. He was deeply loved and will be profoundly missed by his family and friends.
The Pang family would like to extend their thanks to the Internal Medicine team at Toronto General Hospital, as well as to the staff at Belmont House. A very special and profound thank you to his caregivers who never left his side right up until the very end.
A funeral service will be held at St. Paul’s Bloor Street Anglican Church on Saturday, January 17, 2026 at 11:00 a.m. A reception will follow.
Donations can be made to The Salvation Army or to Belmont House.
