Beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and sister in Christ to so many, Doreen Sundarsingh, 89, went to be with her heavenly father in the early morning of 17 February 2025, peacefully and surrounded by family.
She was born in Marabella, Trinidad on 17 December 1935 to Mabel and David Sooknanan. The second of three children, she grew up with older brother Lionel and younger sister Barbara. Jacob Sundarsingh saw a beautiful young woman across a crowded church, and after getting to know each other, they were married in May of 1951.They shared their home with Jacob's mother Poolmania, and had nine beautiful children there: Annette, Lynnette, Ingrid, Jacob Jr., Leslie, Joel, Angeline, Deryck, and Cydian. Alongside their children, they raised Stella, Radica, and Joash. They loved their children immeasurably. Doreen taught her children how to live a good life through her consistency and certainty in what she believed. She modelled and discussed the constancy of Christ's love with them and showed them how to build their life on a bedrock of faith.
In May of 1975, Doreen and Jacob moved the family to Toronto. It was there that Doreen's life expanded to include even more joy. Nine grandchildren and eight great-grands arrived over the years, starting in December 1975. Though she loved her children deeply, grandchildren would say that Grandma was her favourite role. She treasured her time with them, always making sure to ask them about their school and work lives and praying for their needs and success. Though Doreen was famous for her bread at Christmas and Easter, making it was often not a solo activity - she loved to have a grandkid under her arm rolling out dough, and even when she didn't she often made smaller loaves just for them.
Doreen was an active Christian her entire life. She read her Bible daily, and could be heard singing "Blessed Assurance" or other gospel songs. She was a constant presence at prayer meetings, and never missed a chance to tell neighbours and friends of the joy and peace that the Holy Spirit brought to her life.
Doreen will always be remembered for the love she brought to the lives around her - so much that everyone she met called her "Mom" - and the way that she made people feel welcome in her home. We will miss hearing her voice, and we couldn't have asked for a better mother and grandmother. We will miss her every day.
Doreen was preceded in death by her husband, Jacob, and is survived by her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
The viewing is from 6-9pm on Friday 21 February and at 10am on Saturday 22 February at Turner & Porter Yorke Chapel, 2357 Bloor St. W. The funeral service will begin on Saturday 22 February at 11am.
