It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Claus Dieter Feser on Easter Sunday, April 20th, at the age of 81.
Claus was the devoted husband of Sonja, a proud brother to Christa, brother-in-law to Monika Celec, and a cherished uncle to Rudi Hoppel (Evelyn) and Peter Celec (Celeste). He will be lovingly remembered by his cousin Hansjörg Vögele (Lorraine Jones) along with his children Christian Vögele (Sena Kutlu), Stefanie Vögele (Patric Rottenecker), Ursula Feser (Winfried Laubis), Manfred Feser (Doris Hapke), Susanne Feser (Oliver Weingand), Joachim Feser (Sieglinde Braitsch) and Isabella Feser (Jürgen Braun). He is also fondly remembered by his great-nephews Oliver Hoppel, Peter Xavier and Matthew Alexander Celec and his godchild Stefanie Jansen Poulin (Stephane Poulin) and their daughters Natascha and Katja Poulin.
Born in Germany’s Black Forest, Claus began his journey in the beauty industry at the tender age of 13, helping in his mother’s salon after school. By 15, he had entered a formal three-year apprenticeship; by 18, he was already passionately pursuing his craft with remarkable dedication. At just 22, he earned his prestigious Trade Master’s Degree — an impressive achievement at such a young age. His talent and ambition soon took him to major European cities including London, Paris, Berlin, and Düsseldorf.
In search of new challenges and opportunities, Claus emigrated to Canada, where his passion for hair design and entrepreneurship flourished. Just five years later, he became the majority partner of Haute Coiffure, and shortly after marrying the love of his life, Sonja, he took over as complete owner. Claus was not only an exemplary stylist but also a natural leader, mentor, and visionary.
He inspired countless apprentices and colleagues throughout his career.
Claus was the founder of the Interstyling Hair Dressing Seminars, a platform artist for Goldwell, and a consultant for one of Europe’s leading hair cosmetic companies. He taught advanced styling, perming, and colouring techniques, and hosted overseas skill exchanges. His innovative work was regularly featured in both national and international publications, including Chatelaine, Homemaker’s, Canadian Living, Images, Top Hair, Flare, Modern Woman, and Salon Magazine.
A charismatic presence, Claus also appeared on television for several years, including a seven-year run on the syndicated show The New You and frequent guest spots on City TV’s Cityline. His lifelong contributions to the hairstyling industry were honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Annual Canadian Hairstylist Awards in 1997.
Even with his demanding schedule, Claus always found time to give back. He organized and participated in numerous fundraising events, supporting causes close to his heart such as the Sierra Club, Kidney Foundation, SickKids Hospital, and Parkinson’s research.
Known for his tireless curiosity and love of learning, Claus never stopped exploring new techniques and pushing boundaries. He brought this same spirit into his family life — joyfully teaching his great-nephews everything from basic household tasks to more complex projects as they grew older.
Claus leaves behind a legacy of excellence, generosity, and love. He touched the lives of so many — not only through his art, but through his mentorship, warmth, and unshakable belief in the power of hard work and creativity.
He will be deeply missed, and forever remembered.
A Celebration of Life will be observed on Sunday, May 25th at 11AM Turner & Porter Yorke Chapel, 2357 Bloor St W, Toronto.
The family appreciates all of the expressions of support and condolences and asks that in lieu of flowers, a tree be planted in his memory:
