We are deeply saddened to announce the peaceful passing of our Mother, Grandmother and Great-Grandmother, Bohdanna Mackiw on November 29, 2025 at the age of 95.
Beloved Mother of Christine (predeceased 2023), Martha (Denis Moher, deceased), and Helen “Olenka” Doyle (predeceased 2020). Pre-deceased by her cherished Husband, Vladimir (2001). Devoted Grandmother to Andrew Sprung (Alison Sandstrom), Olena Moher (J.J. Van Dijk), Michael Moher (Elizabeth), Matthew Doyle (Alessandra) and Marta Moher. Great-Grandmother to Anna, Elizabeth, Hudson, Jack and Callum. Survived by Sons-in-Law, Phil Scarisbrick and John Doyle.
Bohdanna was born in Ivano-Frankivsk, formerly Stanislawiw, Ukraine. She spent her childhood years in Lviv, Ukraine with her mother, Irene Szymanski, her step-father, Gregory Szymanski and step-sister, Daria Elyjiw. Uprooted during the Second World War, the family spent time in displaced person camps in Austria and Germany, before emigrating to Canada in 1948.
In 1951, Bohdanna met her husband, Vladimir, in Ottawa. Together they raised three daughters, moving to Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta (1954-1967), eventually settling in Toronto in 1967. Maintaining her Ukrainian cultural roots and her family were the focus of Bohdanna’s life. She loved to host, and her talents for baking and cooking, especially her holiday meals, were legendary. She will be forever remembered for her warmth, kindness and wonderful sense of humour.
We would like to extend our deepest appreciation to her devoted caregiver, Daca, whose exceptional care and compassion gave Bohdanna great comfort, companionship and quality of life over the many years.
A funeral mass will be held at St. Demetrius Ukrainian Catholic Church (135 La Rose Ave., Toronto) on Monday, December 8, 2025 at 10:30 a.m.
