In Loving Memory of Bernard “Bernie” Kappius
February 15, 1947 - January 9, 2025
It is with love and sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Bernie on Thursday, January 9, 2025 at his home in Mississauga.
Cherished husband of 50 years to Lynda (née Kosciolek); loving father to Bonnie (Jeremy) and Lauren (Harris); fun-loving Grandpa to Oliver, Zoe, Wyatt and Walter. He will be missed by his sister Marion (Neil); nephews Jeffrey and Jesse and their families; brother-in-law Ron; Peggy, and countless friends.
Born in Germany, Bernie came to Canada at the age of 10. In Canada, he went on to pursue higher education at York University. It was there that he met his anchor, Lynda, and they both embarked on a 30+ year career in education.
Leaving teaching was far from the end for Bernie, who realized early he was not ready for a traditional retirement and pursued a variety of unique opportunities, including teaching in Central America, marshalling at his golf course, and working at Rona for the discount.
A man of varied interests, Bernie was known for his endless collecting and tinkering. Whether it was collecting stamps, building train sets, or working on his latest stained-glass creation, Bernie always had a project on the go. He was also an avid traveler, fanatically capturing memories with his camera and sharing his experiences through his legendary post-trip slideshows. From rainforests to ruins and ski trips to cruises, Bernie was always dreaming of his next adventure with Lynda and the girls.
He will be best remembered for his sense of adventure; his appreciation of greasy-spoons and action flicks; and his enduring love of Rock 'n' Roll.
In keeping with his wishes, cremation has already taken place. Please join us in celebrating Bernie's life at Turner & Porter (Peel Chapel, 2180 Hurontario St., Mississauga on Tuesday, January 21, 2025 at 3:00 p.m. where we will gather to share stories in honor of a life well lived. On-site reception to follow immediately after.
Many thanks to the multiple PSWs and caregivers who tended to Bernie in his final chapter. As an expression of sympathy, if desired, memorial donations may be made to Parkinson Canada or the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
