Died in Mississauga, on 26 March 2025 in his 95th year.
Survived by his partner, Penny Ecclestone, his daughter Britta (La Rippe, Switzerland) and other family members in Scotland, Denmark and the US. Predeceased by his wife of 55 years, Nina, his daughter Bente, and by his brother Duncan (Helensburgh, Scotland).
Alasdair, after practicing law in Glasgow, Scotland, and in Winnipeg, served for almost 30 years as President, Retail Council of Canada. He interrupted his service to act for four years as Vice President, Consumer and Corporate Affairs, T. Eaton Co. Ltd.
In semi-retirement he acted for three years as Director, International Affairs for National Retail Federation of New York. For almost 20 years he was Canadian correspondent of Racher Press, New York, publisher of retail trade publications. He was also associated for many years with Mackenzie Financial, serving on its Board, which he chaired for two years, and on the boards of its associated companies.
As an Order of Canada member, Alasdair acted for a decade as Presiding Officer at Canadian citizenship ceremonies. As an immigrant himself, it gave him great pleasure to have sworn in over 20,000 new Canadians.
The gathering to mark the life of Alasdair will be held at the Glenerin Inn in Mississauga on Monday 12 May at 11h00.
In lieu of flowers, donations to Community Living, Mississauga (6695 Millcreek Drive Unit #1Mississauga, Ontario L5N 5R8, an organisation which was very close to Alasdair’s heart.
