It is with deep sadness that the family of Wanda Helen Chmiel announce her unexpected but peaceful death on the 10th of October 2025 at the age of 90.
Born in Cooksville, Ontario in 1935, Wanda was the devoted firstborn child and eldest daughter of Joseph and Pauline Chmiel (nee Cwynar). Raised and educated in Toronto’s West End, Wanda spent much of her working life until retirement as a loyal and valued administrator in the Human Resources Department of the University of Toronto. Outside of her work, she gave selflessly of her time and talents to charitable organizations within the Polish and Roman Catholic communities in the Greater Toronto Area, not least as a long-standing parishioner, volunteer, and organizer at St Maximilian Kolbe Parish in Mississauga and as a member of the board of directors of Toronto’s Copernicus Lodge, a role for which she was honoured by former Lieutenant Governor David Onley.
But Wanda’s greatest gift was her unconditional love and support for her family. Her pride in and generosity to her niece and nephews and their families was limitless and she represented a vital link to the generations who raised and nurtured them.
Wanda was a woman of strong, relentless faith who had every confidence of being reunited in the presence of the Lord with her treasured parents, Joseph and Pauline, and her beloved siblings and their spouses: sister Jean Philchuk and husband Fred and brother Edward Chmiel and wife Iris (nee Laker).
Left to mourn her and to give thanks for her presence in their lives are her nephews and niece Steven (Karla) Philchuk, Ted (Seanna) Philchuk, Lori (Denny) Sousa – all of the Greater Toronto Area - and David Chmiel of London, UK. She was the adoring Great Aunt of Ben, Sam, Hannah, Jordan, Jessica, Sienna, Joey, Riley and Jacob and the Great-Grand Aunt of Finn.
Family and friends may call at the Turner & Porter Peel Chapel, 2180 Hurontario Street, Mississauga on Wednesday the 22nd of October, 2025 from 6:30PM to 8:30PM. A Funeral Mass will be held at St Maximilian Kolbe Parish, 4260 Cawthra Road, Mississauga on Thursday the 23rd of October at 11.00AM followed by interment at Glen Oaks Mausoleum, 3164 Ninth Line, Oakville.
Wanda was a regular and prolific contributor to over sixty charities annually. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating in her memory to a charitable cause of your choosing.
Aunty Wanda, we will treasure your memory always. May flights of angels lead you into paradise and eternal rest.
