History behind Nash The Slash's 1979 Custom Bosnar "THE MANDOBLASTER" Electric Mandolin

In 1973 Nash originally purchased a Gibson EM-200 "Electric Florentine" electric SG style mandolin and it became his main instrument. The EM-200 was much heftier and Nash was quoted as saying "I knew it was magic the first time I held it. The neck is a bit wider and deeper than the usual mandolin, and it has a hefty feel to it. The body is connected at the 14th fret, not the usual 10th fret on an acoustic mandolin. The body was a solid slab of mahogany, and the instrument felt like a mini-Les Paul. The pick-up was a custom Gibson design similar to a humbucker but with only 4 pick-up screws. The strings went over the bridge into a tailpiece, one of the few design flaws. I chose to later correct on my custom instruments."

It was in 1979 that Nash met Vladimir Bosnar, a well-respected instrument maker living in Toronto. He had worked at Gibson Guitars and was involved in the development of such classics as the Thunderbird and the Flying V. In his spare time he had created some fine acoustic violins and cellos as well. He was a well-rounded luthier. Nash took his Gibson mandolin to him and he carefully noted all the measurements, in particular neck dimensions and body weight. Vladimir was familiar with the instrument and Nash wanted him to make an exact replica except that he would provide a new body design. Since the music world was very guitar based at the time, Nash wanted the mandolin to respond well to guitar effects. Another observation was that a mandolin doesn't need multiple pickups or extreme tone controls because it doesn't have the sonic range of a guitar.

The first of 4 mandolins Bosnar created for Nash and was named THE MANDOBLASTER. This custom electric mandolin is what Nash called "four-string heaviness!". It can be heard on songs such as Something Weird On My TV from the album Thrash. It was also played live and in studio by Nash was he was a part of the famous Canadian prog-rock band FM. THE MANDOBLASTER is a 4-string instrument tuned down a fourth. It has a Bill Lawrence L-500 guitar pickup similar to the pickup found in a Strat. The pickup is a blade pole piece, creating better sustain. It is a stacked Humbucker, very loud and clean. It is so hot there is no active circuit needed. The body is mahogany and the neck is made of 100% cured Canadian Maple.

The Promise -
When in Rome

If you need a friend
Don't look to a stranger
You know in the end
I'll always be there
And when you're in doubt
And when you're in danger
Take a look all around
And I'll be there
I'm sorry but I'm just thinking of the right words to say
(I promise you)
I know they don't sound the way I planned them to be
(I promise you)
But if you wait around a while I'll make you fall for me
(I promise you)
I promise, I promise you, I will
When your day is through
And so is your temper
You know what to do
I'm gonna always be there
Sometimes if I shout
It's not what's intended
These words just come out
With no cross to bear
I'm sorry but I'm just thinking of the right words to say
(I promise you)
I know they don't sound the way I planned them to be
(I promise you)
But if you wait around a while I'll make you fall for me
(I promise you)
I promise, I promise you
I'm sorry but I'm just thinking of the right words to say
(I promise you)
I know they don't sound the way I planned them to be
(I promise you)
And if I had to walk the world I'd make you fall for me
I promise you, I promise you I will
Gotta tell you
Need to tell you
Gotta tell you
I've gotta tell you
I'm sorry but I'm just thinking of the right words to say
(I promise you)
I know they don't sound the way I planned them to be
(I promise you)
But if you wait around a while I'll make you fall for me
(I promise you)
I promise, I promise you
I'm sorry but I'm just thinking of the right words to say
(I promise you)
I know they don't sound the way I planned them to be
(I promise you)
And if I had to walk the world I'd make you fall for me
I promise you, I promise you I will
I will, I will

Forwarded from the president of The Bruce Trail:

Vlad was a very kind and hugely supportive volunteer.

I fondly recall hiking with Vlad on a 'Walking Wounded' hike, enjoying warm conversations with him and savouring refreshments at a Georgetown pub. A true gentleman and loyal friend has left us.
Vlad had been a hike leader, head of the Toronto Land Stewards, TBTC board member, and founder of the Biodiversity Team. I spent a good deal of my early time as a volunteer with the TBTC under Vlad's mentorship. I will recall many happy times accompanying him and Lynn as the led the "Wallking Wounded" on car hikes.
