In Celebration of

Valentine Scholl

March 21, 1918 -  June 1, 2021

Our dear mother, Valentine Scholl (nee Miron), passed away peacefully on June 1st, 2021 in her 104th year at Copernicus Lodge after a long and eventful life. Always proud of her Polish heritage, her strength and courage helped her to survive wars, revolutions, exile and pandemics and her travels spanned four continents. Beloved wife of the late Frank Peter Scholl and predeceased by her mother, Maria Miron. Loving mother of Christine Moisan (Michel) and Mary Higgison (Walter). Will be sadly missed by her grandchildren, Michael (Amber) and Greg (Eva) Higgison, great-grandchildren, Andrew, Keely and Ashton, and great-great-granddaughter Ivey. The family would like to thank the caring and attentive staff at Copernicus Lodge who made her last years more comfortable. Due to Covid 19 restrictions limiting attendance, a private family service will be held on June 9th Turner and Porter Yorke Chapel, followed by interment at Park Lawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations to Copernicus Lodge or the Alzheimer Society would be greatly appreciated.

It is with great sadness that one must say goodbye to a loved friend of my family and yet, at the same time, one must Give Thanks for Her long life and many triumphs over adversity.

I shall miss you."

My mother was a survivor and loved her independence. She did everything she could to avoid going into a nursing home but cognitive impairment in her early 90's made living alone in her condo very unsafe. We were always worried that something would happen to her but she managed to live on her own until she was 97 and moved to Wawel Villa in Mississauga. In her late 80's Mother wrote a poem expressing her desire to pass away peacefully and without any fanfare. The poem is written in Polish, but I have translated it so that it can be read by family and friends. Unlike Mother, I am not a poet, but I tried to capture the spirit in which it was written.

A Prayer to God

I know that I am fated to soon depart this earth,
Lord, take me into your glory.
I commend my soul into your care
You who are just in all your splendour.
No one will carry banners to bid me farewell,
I will soon be forgotten.
For I was never a hero
But rather a humble and ordinary being.
One thing I ask, dear Lord --
Grant me a quiet and peaceful death.
May I be worthy of your grace while on earth
And may no one weep over my grave.
I travel to a better world far away,
Leaving this wandering life for happiness throughout Eternity.
