Tom passed away at The Trillium Mississauga Hospital on September 4, 2025.

Tom was born in Dundas, ON to Ruth and Langford Smith. He was predeceased by both his parents and his stepfather Hector Armstrong.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Judy; son, David (Sonia) and 2 grandchildren Emily and Noah; and sister, Sharon Pielsticker (Bob).

He also leaves behind his sister-in-law Sue Brunton (Lloyd); sister-in-law Barb Munshaw; sister-in-law Terry Richards; numerous nieces and nephews from the Richards family and the Pielsticker family; and Frazer family cousins.

He grew up on Brookside Avenue in Toronto, attended Humbercrest Public School, Runneymede Collegiate, Burnhamthorpe Collegiate, Humber College and York University.

In 1974 he began his career working for Canada Trust in pensions. In 1982 he was accepted into a unique public/private (IBM) endeavour to encourage more disabled individuals to enter the IT industry. It was an intense 1-year programme. He subsequently worked for CSG as an independent consultant through the 1980’s. He retired from TD Canada Trust in 2019 after a 30-year career as an IT development consultant.

Together Tom and Judy travelled to England, France, and Italy. With the adoption of David, they got to know Peru (where Tom was able to visit Machu Picchu); spent a month in France and Belgium; visited five of the ten provinces of Canada and many parts of the USA. He loved their vacation home in Arizona which had been built to wheelchair (ADA) specifications. Most of all he loved his home by the lake in Port Credit.

He was a gentle man with a love of life, an indominable spirit and a unique sense of humour. He overcame many adversities. He was born with spina bifida and club feet, paralyzed at the age of 12 in a playground accident, and suffered a life of pain from multiple surgeries. He always remained optimistic and lived a full and rewarding life. His passions were EPL football, Raptors basketball and above all, his family.

He was exceptional.

Cremation has taken place. There will be a Memorial service on Saturday, October 18 at Turner & Porter Peel Chapel. Visitation at 10:00 am to be followed by service at 11:00 am. If you plan to attend the lunch afterwards, please respond to smithj46@hotmail.com by October 13.
