In Celebration of

Theresa Bany

February 10, 1926 -  May 2, 2023

It is with much sadness that we announce the passing of Theresa Bany at the age of 97 on May 2, 2023. Theresa was surrounded by family and friends in her last days before dying peacefully at home. She is now reunited in Heaven with her husband Stanley Bany, as well as her parents and brothers. Theresa leaves behind her 2 children, Stephen and Christina (Michele), as well as her 2 grandchildren Elijah and Michela. She also leaves behind her nephews and nieces (Gary, Marolyn, Doug, Joan, Pat, Brent, Marcia), her sister-in-law Joan, and her forever friends (Emily Howe, Mary Onderson, Anne Brozina, Colin Maguire, Pat Cachia, and last but certainly not least, Pat Robb) who will cherish her memory forever.

Theresa was born February 10, 1926, in the Karpatian Mountains of Czech Republic and immigrated to Canada when she was 12 years old, where her family originally settled in Quebec before relocating to Toronto. She met her husband Stan in 1947 and they were married on May 8th of the following year at the age of 22. They could not have children of their own, but they opened their hearts and home to Stephen and Christina and raised them with much love and affection. A devout Catholic, her faith was always the central part of her life and made it known to all who knew her. When she wasn’t at church she enjoyed time at the casinos, could be found in her kitchen making her famous dishes (apple pie, butter tarts, coffee cakes, pierogi, cabbage rolls, chicken soup to name a few), partaking in annual walking pilgrimages to the Martyrs Shrine in Midland, indulging at the Mandarin and playing cards with her friends. Her door was always open to anyone who needed a place to stay or an ear to listen, and she always did what she could to help those around her whether she knew them for 90 years or 9 days. We thank her for everything she’s done for us, her words of wisdom, her tenacious spirit, and for being our “accidental” comedian. She will be sorely missed but will live on in our hearts forever. Thank you to all who surrounded Theresa this past week with prayers, visits, love and support. The family wishes to extend their heartfelt gratitude for The Dorothy Ley Hospice Palliative Care Team (particularly her nurse Vladimir) for all that they have done to care for Theresa over the last two years.

The funeral visitation will take place on Monday May 8th from 5-8 PM at Turner & Porter Funeral Home Yorke Chapel located on the corner of Bloor Street West and Windermere. The Funeral Mass will take place on Tuesday, May 9th at 10:00 AM at Holy Family Catholic Church on King Street. Burial to follow at Park Lawn Cemetery at the corner of Prince Edward Drive and Bloor Street West. If so desired, in lieu of flowers, mass cards or donations to “Aid to the Church in Need” and “The Sisters of Charity” in Theresa’s memory would be appreciated.

I will always remember her humorous question to me and my look of shock. When I looked at her she had a knowing, funny smile. I couldn't help but laugh at her sense of humour. A special lady that will bring laughter to heaven.

Auntie Theresa where to start. The cat named Mickie, the bird, bridge nights, trips to Belleville. Memories of happiness and love you always gave to me. The keeper of faith and a woman of strength is what you were and still are to me. You were my Auntie your home was my home away from home. My family and I love you to the moon and back and you will always be apart of us.

I will always remember Aunt Theresa for her "12 days of Christmas" cooking. Her continued physical activity was an example to follow as we all grow older.
Sincere condolences to Christina and her family.
