In Celebration of

Teruya "Terry" Kobayashi

January 14, 1975 -  August 25, 2020

Teruya “Terry” Kobayashi was born in Osaka, Japan to Naoe and Takuya Kobayashi and his older sister Miki. Terry's family first moved to Montreal, Canada when he was three years old. They later moved to Toronto where Terry spent much of his life.

When he was young, Terry practiced Aikido and also played golf with his father. He was a very strong golf player. He studied Commerce at first, then the Culinary Arts at George Brown and later at Le Cordon Bleu in London, UK. This is where he met his wife, Petra, who studied at a University nearby. Terry travelled extensively and lived for some time in Italy, France, Finland and the US. He was a very skilled and artistic chef. In Toronto, he worked at restaurants such as Centro, Colborne Lane, Origin, AME, Momofuku, Ursa and many more. He later settled down at Bondi Produce where he helped start New Toronto Foods. Terry was an incredibly hard worker, quiet and resilient. He was also a very supportive, loving and proud father to his twin daughters.

Terry passed away very suddenly from a brain aneurysm on August 25th, 2020 at St. Michael’s Hospital in Toronto. For those who wish, in Terry’s honour, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society. He will be missed by many and always remembered.

I met Terry only a few times but I saw a very goodhearted person with right values. A person who could be trusted and loyal. Terry taught me to put champagne in risotto and it was the best food I ever had. He knew also how to treat my dear friend with respect and loved her very much from what I saw. Time to leave came way to early but I know Petra will cherish their past and the legacy now through their amazing twin girls.

Terry was one of the first chefs to take me under his wing. He was a hard person to work for as he demanded nothing but excellence from his cooks. I was saddened and shocked at his death and I know he will be missed. thank you for your years of service Chef Kobayashi.

Sincerely,
Kaz Marcano

I am sorry for your lose. Even thou I lost touch with Terry in the past few years I always and will always consider him a close friend.

Terry was a talented, passionate person. His calm and friendly attitude was infectious. Everybody looked up to him and hoped one day they could be as talented as him. But most of all what I remembered about him was his loyalty and dedication to his family. No matter the job or the amount of hours he worked, his family came first. I will never forget that.

Terry’s life touched a lot of people and I know for a fact he will never be forgotten amounts us.

My thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends.

Rest In Peace CHEF!
