Teresa Romita born Feb. 2, 1930 in Palo del Colle, her parents with the children moved to Modugno, Bari where she lived in close proximity to the man she eventually married. After the war she married young at age 19 to Tommaso Romita. Due to the devastation of the war, Italy was in rubbles, people under duress immigrated to various countries to try and make a living. She moved to Liege, Belgium with her husband and one child where they lived together for 2 years before immigrating to Canada. She would eventually have 2 other children, a son and daughter.
Teresa suffered the loss of her husband when she was only 63 years old. She managed to continually help her family as they forged their life, always a positive guiding force. She rejoiced in her 4 grandchildren and later was blessed with 2 great grandsons. She was very active in her Italian community, where they celebrated Italian food, folklore, religious pilgrimages and played bingo for pennies, (she kept a separate wallet for her winnings). She befriended both young and old in her community and was always described as a joyous, positive, elegant lady.
Teresa was diagnosed with lung cancer but managed to combat it’s ravages with dignity and never complained. She often said there is no point to complain, this is life and one must endure whatever comes your way, remembering that there is always someone who is worse off than you are. Her doctors admired her courage and positive attitude, they describe her as having lived beyond all expectations due to her positive attitude. Whenever they asked how she was she always responded “fine”. She practised her faith and placed herself in the hands of her catholic beliefs.
She will be sorely missed by her family and her friends.
