Teresa Nykamp ( née Rooney) b. Oct 7, 1925 in Barrhead, Scotland - d. October 16, 2018, in Mississauga, Ontario

Cherished wife of André Nykamp for 62 years, loving mother to Paul, Patricia, Stephen (Claire) Terri (Neil) and David (Jean). Devoted grandmother to Jeremy and Nicole Nykamp, Ryan and Liam Dowie and Natalie and Matthew Nykamp. She was our wise counsel, our moral compass and we shall miss her desperately.

Predeceased, just three months ago, by her dear husband André, and also by her sisters Anna Rooney and Patricia (Frank) Thomas of Scotland and Kathleen Rooney and Roseleen Rooney of Toronto. Survived by her dear sister Maureen Rooney of New York, her sister-in-law Riet (Theo) Gout-Nijkamp of the Netherlands, her brother-in-law Frank Thomas of Scotland and numerous nieces and nephews, all of whom will miss her kind and generous nature.

Teresa was born in Scotland of Irish parents, educated as a teacher at the University of Glasgow and came to Canada for adventure. Here, she continued her teaching career, met her dashing Dutchman Andre, settled, raised her children and welcomed three of her sisters, as they too, followed her lead to North America. She was a talented teacher, a fine seamstress, an avid historian and literarian, a health food nut, a supportive sister, a loyal friend and most of all a wonderful wife and mother. Teresa always had her nose in a book, her mind on social justice and whenever possible, cards in her hands. She was a crack bridge player. Her biweekly games over the past fifty odd years with the "bridge club ladies" were a means of escape for a few brief hours from the responsibilities of child-rearing in the early years and more than a bit of fun and afternoon tipple, in the more recent past.

Teresa was also deeply religious, believing mightily in the power of prayer. Her unbending faith and calm, resolute nature, carried her, and by extension her family, through health challenges in the final years.

Teresa died much as she lived, peacefully and without a fuss. Uncomplaining to the end, despite her serious illness, she received God's final blessing, gently drew her last breath, and went off to join her darling André, as he waited to guide her away.

The family wishes to thank the medical team at Credit Valley Hospital for their excellent care of Teresa during the past month. As an expression of sympathy, memorial donations may be made to St. Vincent de Paul Society.
