Dad could make a friend where ever he went, and easily endeared himself to others.
He would strike up conversations with those around him, and find a stranger had become an acquaintance, and acquaintances become friends. There are just too many of these instances to speak of just one. However, there is a memory of Dad going out of his way to help someone in need, even when the odds weren't good.
Though the exact event is a little faded now, here is what I recall:
We were traveling on I 90 - New York Thruway, when a bicycle wheel bounced across the road in front of us. Sylvin insisted we pull over and pick it up, for surely someone would need it. His logic was, that everyone was traveling along the thruway, and stopping to gas up and eat, and eventually we would find the car, with a bike with a missing wheel.
And it happened just like that. It turned out to be the wheel of a young woman heading off to college, and that bike was her transportation. Was she ever grateful that Dad had decided to stop and pick it up.
