In Celebration of

Sun-Kyoo “Sonia” Shim (Lim)

December 29, 1947 -  April 28, 2025

Sun-Kyoo “Sonia” Shim (Lim) born December 29, 1947 in Seoul, South Korea, left her earth body peacefully on April 28, 2025 in Toronto, Canada.

Sonia immigrated to Canada in 1968 as a 21-year old newlywed who spoke no English but quickly embraced the opportunities of her new country and culture. Finding work at first where she could at the Sunbeam factory in south Etobicoke, she then went on to run eight businesses over her lifetime, including a convenience store, lottery kiosk, two Kitchen Table grocery stores and several restaurants – Marie’s Deli Inn, Hot Spot Café, Fenmar Café and finally, the Café at Team Chrysler.

Sonia was a friendly, energetic and enthusiastic entrepreneur with a relentless desire to work hard for her family, friends and customers. Owning and operating businesses fueled her independent spirit. She never let anyone derail her drive and she led her life fearlessly and on her own terms with authenticity and class.

She loved cooking, gardening, singing Karaoke, entertaining, watching figure skating, American Idol and Food Network, and always looking her best with her signature red lipstick and manicure.

Most of all, Sonia was a wonderful, caring, and inspirational mom and grandma who will be sadly missed and fondly remembered by her loving family. Daughters, Jeanhy Shim and Annhy Shim. Son-in-Laws, Michael Jordan and Michael Morel. Grandchildren, Julien, Maya and Victor.

But this is only ‘goodbye for now’ as we know Sonia is in heaven and already opening her new restaurant where we will all meet again one day to enjoy her delicious food (and poutine!), amazing hospitality and dazzling smiles.

Dear Jeanhy, Maya, Annhy and the rest of the immediate family. I am so sorry for your loss. I know what a powerhouse Sonja was and how much love she gave to all of you. She will be missed. I never got to meet her but feel like I know her through the descriptions Jeanhy would relate to me of her. No wonder her daughters turned out to be such incredible, independent and successful women..As we say in the Jewish tradition: let her memory be a blessing. All my love, Melissa Shiff
