It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Stephen John Taylor on January 30, 2025, at the age of 57, after a courageous three-year battle with brain cancer.
Stephen was born in Bramhall, England, grew up in Watford and after attending John Moore's University, settled in Liverpool. Encouraged by his parents, his love for sports and education began at an early age. A natural leader with an adventurous spirit, he pursued swimming and running in his youth, working as a lifeguard and completing the Great North Run and the London Marathon alongside his father. He was a dedicated fan of Manchester City Football Club, attending games regularly while living in England and watching them every week after moving to Canada. Those who knew Stephen remember his sharp wit, kind heart, and unwavering dedication to the people and causes he loved.
Stephen moved to Canada, where he married the love of his life, Sheila Gilkinson. Their story began in Baltimore at the Lacrosse World Championships, where fate brought them together. It was love at first sight, and within weeks, they were engaged, marrying a year later and embarking on a beautiful journey filled with love, laughter, and shared adventures. Together, they built a wonderful life in Canada and raised two incredible daughters, Emily (19) and Jessica (15). As a family, they embraced every moment, traveling the world, exploring nature through hikes, and enjoying theatre, concerts, and meaningful time together. Their bond was unbreakable, and their memories, cherished.
A dedicated educator, Stephen was a teacher in England and Peel, and most recently served as a Vice Principal in the Hamilton-Wentworth DSB. His greatest passion lay in growing the game of lacrosse. His contributions to the sport on a global scale were immeasurable. An accomplished umpire, he earned his International Umpire accreditation in 1996, officiated over 100 international matches and as Women's Officiating Director for World Lacrosse, coordinated the officials for three World Championships. Beyond officiating, Stephen was instrumental in the development and expansion of lacrosse worldwide, helping to lay the foundation for the sport’s return to the Olympics in 2028. In recognition of his contributions, World Lacrosse presented him with the “International Honorary Officiating Award” in September 2024. Stephen also contributed on a local level, umpiring and coaching as well as taking on the roles of Officiating Director and Technical Director and finally, Commissioner, of the Ontario Women's Field Lacrosse League. Stephen’s impact on the sport and its global community will be deeply felt for generations to come
Stephen will be profoundly missed by his beloved wife, Sheila, and their daughters, Emily and Jessica. He is also survived by his loving parents, Barry and Margaret Taylor; his sisters, Claire Taylor (Nigel Meager) and Alison Taylor (David Sinclair); and his extended family, including brothers and sisters-in-law Stan Gilkinson (Lasha), Paul Gilkinson (Mary), Peter Gilkinson, Marie Pringle (Pat), Bill Gilkinson, and Liz Beemer (Matt). He leaves behind many adoring nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends whose lives he touched with his warmth and generosity.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to the Brain Tumour Foundation (www.braintumour.ca) or to the Stephen Taylor Scholarship (laxrules@hotmail.com). This annual scholarship, awarded since 2023, is given to an OWFL official attending a post-secondary institution who has officiated in the OWFL during the current season and has demonstrated a passion and commitment to the sport of women’s field lacrosse in the spirit of Stephen’s legacy.
