Sophie, in her 93rd year, passed away peacefully on May 9, 2024 after a brief illness. Our “matriarch” lived a long and happy life dedicated to Wally, her devoted husband of nearly 70 years. Predeceased by her parents, John & Josephine (Śliska) Zembala; and sister, Christine Sikorski. She will be remembered dearly by her sister Dianne Lukas. Loving mother to Brian, Barbara (Kent Ruhnke), and Christine (Reynold Unwin). Awesome Babci to Laura (Frederic Tissot), Corey (Blair Adam), and Nicole (Stephen O’Riordan). Babi to Kayla, Jax, and Blake Tissot; Bennett, William, and Annabelle Ruhnke; and Emily and Ava O’Riordan. A graduate of the Toronto Normal School, Sophie was an elementary school teacher for 10 years before choosing to focus on her family and home. She was a founding member of the Marie Curie Skłodowska Association about which her charitable work and social life revolved. Sophie enjoyed holidaying with Wally, was an avid bridge player, and adored spending time at the family cottage on Georgian Bay. She will be remembered as a charming, congenial, loyal, diligent, caring, and loving wife, mother, sister, aunt, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend.
