In Celebration of

Sister Mary Claudianne Hudy (Felician Sister)

May 14, 1921 -  May 3, 2021

Sister Mary Claudianne, 99, a Felician Sister for 81 years, peacefully went home to her God on Monday, May 3rd (11 days before her 100th birthday) at Holy Name of Mary Convent in Mississauga.

A native of Buffalo, New York, the former Sophia Hudy, attended St. Stanislaus School, where she was taught by the Felician Sisters. From an early age in elementary school, she desired to be a Felician Sister. She entered the aspirancy of the Felician Sisters and completed her secondary education at Villa Maria Academy in Buffalo. On July 26, 1939, Sophia entered the Buffalo Province of the Felician Sisters and professed her final vows on August 6, 1947.

During her 81 years of religious life, Sister Mary Claudianne ministered for 42 years as an educator, teaching all grades at various Catholic schools in Buffalo, NY, and the surrounding areas. She received her Bachelor’s degree from Canisius College in 1955, and her Master’s degree from Medaille College in Buffalo. In 1982 Sister Claudianne moved to Canada and ministered at Holy Name of Mary High School as a bookkeeper in the finance office, and worked in the archives at Holy Name of Mary Convent.

In 1989, Sister Claudianne received approval for a permanent transfer to Holy Name of Mary Province in Canada. Sister Claudianne moved to Hamilton and ministered at the Good Shepherd Centre in their accounting department. Sister also was an interpreter to Polish refugees and was instrumental in helping them with their various needs as they settled in the Hamilton area. She enjoyed her many years of working with the Good Shepherd Brothers, and fondly spoke of her experiences and long-lasting friendships she made. Sister felt that during these years of service in the office, and to the poor and needy, she was fulfilling the Good Shepherd Brothers’ mandate, “Charity Unlimited” and the Felician Sisters’ call to use her gifts in joyful service to the Church. In 2000, Sister Claudianne retired from active, paid ministry at the Centre, but then continued to volunteer for the next 12 years. In 2007, she was nominated for a special “Service Award” as Volunteer of the Year. The Brothers and staff appreciated the positive influence and dedication she brought to the Centre. She moved to Mississauga in 2012 and enjoyed her retirement years, despite various health issues. Sister Claudianne helped however she could in the convent, showed a keen interest in community life and events, loved walking outdoors, and did so until a few months prior to her death.

Sister was predeceased by her parents, Thomas and Maria, her sisters Louise, and Charlotte, and her brothers, Theophil, Joseph, and Stanley. She is a beloved aunt to several nieces and nephews.

The Felician Sisters express their sincere gratitude to the nursing staff from Acclaim Health and the Care Company, as well as Dr. Parpia & Dr. Yashpal from the Credit Valley Family Health Team for their great care and support. A private Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in the Convent Chapel on Friday, May 14th – what would have been Sister’s 100th birthday! In Lieu of Flowers, donations may be made to Felician Sisters, Mississauga, or the Good Shepherd Ministries, Hamilton.

Funeral arrangements entrusted to Turner & Porter “Neweduk” Chapel, Mississauga, Ontario.

Sister Claudianne was an amazing person. For many years, I was blessed to share a special and deep friendship with her. I thank the Sisters with whom she lived for their faithful care and concern - a gift she did not take for granted. I believe she is having a glorious reunion with her parents and siblings. She finally got to meet our gracious and loving God for whom she lived her life. Thank you, Claudianne, for being a mentor and friend!
