It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Shirley Helen Yule on April 14, 2020.
Shirley is lovingly remembered by her 2 daughters Wendy Yule (Craig Gammie), Judy Waller (Greg) and four grandchildren: Sean Waller, Tristan Waller, Lynn Gammie, and Colleen Gammie.

She was predeceased by her husband Charles (Chuck) in 1992; also by her parents (John & Maud Dougan) and siblings Pat, Joanne, and Hunter.

Shirley was born in Trail BC on August 30, 1928. She attended Trail Tadanac High School and upon graduation worked as a psychiatric nurse at Essondale for 18 months. Her high school dreams of becoming a journalist came true when she started work as a proofreader at the Trail Daily Times. She quickly ascended the ranks to copy editor, women’s section editor and reporter, and became one the first female city editors in Canada. Shirley met Chuck when he was posted to Trail by the RCMP. They married in 1953 and began the first of their many moves across the country including Prince Rupert, Kamloops (57-60), Vancouver (60-66), Toronto (66-68), Ottawa (68-74), Vancouver (74-77) and Ottawa (77-81). Somehow Shirley made every new place feel like home and got all of us settled in with minimal disruption. When Chuck retired in 1981 they built their dream home in Vernon BC.

Shirley was an active volunteer for many years at the Vernon Museum, Trefoil Guild, and The Kalamalka Caring Clowns. She devoted many hours to her beautiful gardens and to painting porcelain. She loved music and was always singing around the house. Shirley loved to travel and visited China with Chuck. She continued to be an intrepid solo traveler exploring Russia, Europe, Asia, and visiting family in the UK and Ireland. In later years she met Ken Ellison at the Vernon Museum and they enjoyed travelling to South America, New Zealand, and Europe. Back in Vernon, they supported the local symphony and theatre.
