In Celebration of

Shirley Sheila Ward

April 6, 1930 -  November 14, 2024

It is with sadness, eternal love and gratitude that we announce the passing of Shirley Ward (nee Smith) on November 14, 2024 at home, at the age of 94. She was surrounded by loved ones and caregivers. Shirley was born in Montreal, on April 6, 1930, to Charles Smith and Evelyn (nee Desforge) Smith. Predeceased by her 10 beloved brothers and sisters, she is now reunited with her cherished husband, Byron. Loving mother of Stephen, Kevin (Giuliana) and Janice (Carolyn). Treasured grandmother of Justin, Kristyn and Austin. Proud great grandmother to Ivy-Laine. She will be missed by her many nieces, nephews, extended family, friends and caregivers.

Growing up in Montreal, Shirley was very active with her local church youth group and choir. Music was an important aspect of her life. Encouraged by her father at an early age to study voice, she later performed as a soloist at several Toronto churches. She was a devout Presbyterian for her entire life and an active member of the congregation at Morningside-High Park Presbyterian Church. Driven by her love of reading, Shirley worked in the Eaton’s book department in both Montreal and Toronto.

Meeting the love of her life, Byron – they married and moved to Toronto in 1952, settling in the Swansea area. With a nurturing soul, she devoted her life to raising her family – joining the home and school association and providing care, love and guidance.

Bitten by the travel bug she visited Mexico, Jamaica and Hawaii with her beloved Byron. In later years, Byron developed Parkinson's disease, and she rose to the challenge as his primary caregiver until he had to be admitted to long-term care. Regardless, she remained deeply committed to him until his passing in 2003.

Shirley continued to be socially active through the church and other organizations – helping others to overcome personal challenges and hardship. She touched so many lives in a deeply meaningful way. Shirley was greatly loved by all and will be sorely missed.

We are grateful for the wonderful medical care Shirley received over the years from Dr. Silva and more recently from Dr. Phan and the HouseCalls team. Donations can be made on Shirley's behalf to HouseCalls. Please call 416-481-6411 or visit www.sprintseniorcare.org/donate (specify HouseCalls).

All are welcome at Turner & Porter Yorke Chapel in Toronto, 2357 Bloor St. W., Visitation on Sunday, November 24th from 2:00PM to 4:00PM. Service on Monday, November 25th at 11:00AM. Share memories on the Turner & Porter website at www.turnerporter.ca.

I met Shirley from the first time i joined the agency where I work. It was a lovely and interesting visit listening to the story of her life, all the enthusiasm she put to all she did, her strong determination and devotion to all she cared for, so many memories with her. With tears in my eyes, I know she is no longer here, but I also know that she is in a better place now at rest and for that I am glad. Rest in peace Shirley! Love you
