In Celebration of

Robert “Barney” Watt

April 24, 1939 -  January 13, 2025

In loving memory of Barney, who after his valiant battle with an extremely aggressive form of cancer, passed away peacefully on Monday, January 13, 2025.

Barney was born on April 24, 1939 in Toronto. He was the second of four children and lucky enough to have an older sister to keep him out of trouble (when she could). He attended John Wanless Public School in Toronto before moving with his family to St. Jean Quebec. He attended McGill University graduating in Engineering. While at McGill, he was a proud member of the Phi Delta Theta Fraternity where he lived in its house on campus. As a member of the officer training program he spent his time at CFB Chilliwack. He then attended Western University where he obtained his MBA. Barney maintained many lifelong friendships across the country from each of these stages of his life.

Barney was a consummate entrepreneur throughout his working career pursuing careers in investment, real estate and other ventures.

Perhaps Barney’s greatest achievement was finding his wife, Susan (serendipitously at the youth hockey rink as coach and manager respectively) with whom he made a wonderful life full of trips to “The Land”, Clearwater Beach (with the ‘Brady Bunch’ of four sons in tow) and abroad. The boys’ fond memories are of riding snowmobiles and dirt bikes, operating chainsaws, frolicking in the muddy pond and skiing at Talisman Mountain. He augmented his friendships with those of Sue with whom he shared many memorable times including the annual “Bug Fry”, Grey Cup parties and “Wattfest”.

Barney, also known to many as Papa, will be deeply missed by his beloved wife, Susan (GG); sons, Steven (Dee), Ted, Michael (Monique), and James; grandchildren, Jennifer, Donovan, Audrey, Dylan, Ryan, Spencer and Greydon; and his great grandchild Elizabeth; siblings Sandra, and Jim (Holly); and numerous other family members and friends. He is predeceased by his brother Jeff and parents Bob and Bill.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 1pm, on Friday January 24th, at Turner & Porter Yorke Chapel located at 2357 Bloor Street West with a reception to follow at the Home Smith Bar at the Old Mill Hotel, 9 Old Mill Road.

In lieu of flowers, you may make a donation to the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre or a charity of your choice.

For those unable to attend, please celebrate Barney with family and friends online. Please use the livestream button below

Rock and I are very sad to hear of Barney’s passing. We haven’t seen him for many years unfortunately.
I came to Canada in 1978 as a nanny to the Watt family and spent three years with them. Looking after the 4 boys was easy, it was Barney and Sue that needed more attention. Extremely fond memories of being part of their family. All their friends were mine and many celebrations were attended.
Sue, you had a wonderful husband and best friend.
Steve, Mike, Ted and Jamie, many memories to comfort you at this difficult time. Jane and Rock

I cannot help smiling when I think of Barney. He was such a great guy. So many memories, The Land, Christmas dinner on the beach, he and Ted heading out to play golf, patiently listening, for years. to yet another memory of Runnymede. He and Susie made a great team. Rest in peace.

Hi Susan
I’m so sorry, Susan, I’m unable to attend the Service for Barney - I just don’t do ‘long drives’ anymore.
I will watch the Service on Friday and be with you in spirit.
My thoughts are with you and your family.

Humbercrest Hugs
Karen
