June 13, 2024
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Richard "Rick" Frank Masternak, who left us peacefully in his home on June 13, 2024, at the age of 59. Born on July 20, 1964, in Toronto, Rick was known for his warm spirit, generous heart, and infectious energy.
Rick attended Humberside Collegiate Institute in Toronto, where he built lifelong friendships that he cherished, keeping in touch with his classmates through the Alumni app. After completing his education, Rick dedicated over two decades of his life working as a machine operator at the Campbell’s Soup Company from 1992 until 2013. During his time there, he developed lasting friendships and extensive social networks that he held dear.
Rick was an avid sports enthusiast, a talented athlete, and a passionate participant in various leagues. He played hockey and baseball in the Campbell Soup league for many years, known for his competitive nature and memorable sportsmanship. One year during a hockey game, Rick got into a fight. Both players were ejected, and the fight continued down the hallway to the dressing rooms. After the game, Rick and the other player involved in the fight were seen sitting at the bar together, sharing a beer and laughing about the incident. His athletic prowess was also highlighted by his hole-in-one at Banff Springs Golf Course and his victory in the "You The Man" in-house tournament at Campbell’s.
Beyond his professional and athletic pursuits, Rick had a vibrant social life and loved travelling to warm destinations like the Dominican Republic and Jamaica, as well as visiting Calgary and Prince Edward Island, where he spent cherished moments with who he considered his second family. His passion for music was evident in his talent as a DJ, bringing joy and excitement to any gathering.
Rick's kindness was a hallmark of his character. Whether he was offering a helping hand to a neighbour, sharing a heartfelt conversation with a friend, or providing unwavering support to his family, his genuine care and empathy shone through. He had an incredible ability to make those around him feel valued and loved, always putting others before himself.
In his later years, Rick devoted himself to caring for his parents, providing them with the love and support they needed. He regularly visited and maintained the plot for his father, which will now become his own resting place, a testament to his enduring dedication and love for his family.
Rick is survived by his beloved mother, Mary, and his late father, Jozef Masternak. He leaves behind his sisters, Barb, Jean, and Krysia, and his cherished children, Dana and Mitchell, who he had with Susan. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him, including his extended family and numerous friends.
Rick's kindness, generosity, and zest for life will forever remain in our hearts. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Rick's memory to a charity of your choice, reflecting his spirit of giving and compassion.
Rest in peace, Rick. You will always be remembered and missed by those whose lives you touched.
A visitation to honour Rick's life will be held at Turner & Porter - Yorke Chapel, located at 2357 Bloor Street West, Toronto, ON, M6S 1P4, on Friday, June 21, 2024, from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM. All who knew Rick are welcome to join us in remembering and celebrating his remarkable life.
