In Celebration of

Reverend Canon David H. Long

April 6, 1943 -  December 1, 2023

David Long passed away peacefully on December 1, 2023, at his home in Mississauga, with family by his side. He was predeceased by his parents Harold and Hettie Long. Beloved husband of Arlene, proud father of Paul (Genevieve) and Greg (Dawn), blessed by granddaughters Cary and Madeleine and grandpuppy Cosmo. Brother of Bob (late Angela) and the late John (2016) and sister Wendy Long-Davies (late Dr. Robin Davies). Brother-in-law of Elaine Auld (Doug).

David was born in Brampton in 1943 and graduated from Huron University College. He was ordained by the Anglican Church of Canada in 1968, serving 31 years in the Diocese of Toronto and 9 years in Niagara.

Following retirement in 2008, David continued to volunteer at St. James Dundas and then at St. Peter’s Mississauga. He enjoyed travelling, reading, hiking, and watching the Toronto Blue Jays, but most of all being closer to his children and grandchildren. He was kind, humble, adventurous and had a wicked sense of humour that he passed down to his sons and granddaughters.

David received tremendous support and treatment from the Summerville Family Health Team, Trillium Health Partners, Care Partners, and Bayshore HealthCare. Every team member allowed him to maintain a high quality of life after being diagnosed, and to remain at home in his final days. We are truly grateful to each one of you.

Friends may call at the Turner & Porter “Peel” Chapel, 2180 Mississauga (HWY 10, N. of Q.E.W.), on Wednesday, December 06, 2023 from 6-8 PM. Funeral to be held at St. Peter's Anglican Erindale Church, 3041 Mississauga Rd. (at Dundas St. W.), Mississauga, on Thursday, December 07, 2023 at 11 AM.

In lieu of flowers, should you wish to do so, donations to the Primate’s World Relief and Development Fund, Trillium Health Partners Foundation: Oncology, for Cancer Care at Trillium Hospital (click "Make a Donation" at bottom of page), or any other charity of your choice would be appreciated.

To Arlene and all the immediate family, we wish to express our sincere condolences at this difficult time. Remembering the comfort David brought to our family when he officiated at both my Dad’s and later Mom’s funeral services. His empathy and pleasant manner was reassuring.
Childhood memories come back, staying in Brampton in summer with his family, among other things catching bullfrogs at the creek and learning to ride a two wheel bicycle. He will be missed by many.

Dear Arlene,
We are so sorry to hear of David’s passing. But thankful that he is at peace following a tough battle, fought with strength and dignity. We will dearly miss his warm smile beaming from your pew at St Peter’s. Such a kind and caring soul and a loving grandfather - I fondly remember you both bringing Madeleine to the churchyard to pick caterpillars off the trees a couple of years ago to help save them from the ravages of the spongy moths. A great lesson in caring and community service. We are blessed to have known him.
