In Celebration of

Queenie Mascarenhas

March 16, 1930 -  February 6, 2020

Queenie would have celebrated her 90th birthday this month.
We celebrate her life's journey today in photos, videos (under 'Media') and links under 'My Story' on this site. We'd like to thank those that contributed some.

This is the poem by Henry Scott Holland that Queenie selected years ago for her memento

Death is nothing at all, I have only slipped away into the next room,
Whatever we were to each other that we are still,
Call me by my old familiar name, speak to me in the way which you always used.
Laugh as we always laughed at the little jokes we enjoyed together
Play, smile, think of me, pray for me.
Let my name be the household word that it always was, let it be spoken without effort
Life means all that it ever meant,
It is the same as it ever was, there is absolutely unbroken continuity
Why should I be out of your mind because I am out of your sight?
Remember me for all those good times.

Our family would like to thank you all for your support and condolences.
Special thanks to all her caregivers from Cawthra Gardens who made her last 5 years there a home away from home.

May remembering all your cherished memories of Queenie bring you comfort during this time of deep sorrow.

Cosseted acclaimed by all she lived in warmer climes
A life that she had built up over years of dreams she’d climbed
She sold her home, gave up control, a burning need she couldn’t hide
A price she opted to pay to deal with changing times

An introverted woman, appreciative of the arts
She was meant to live alone but she hadn’t learned just how
She claimed her goals through discipline, and unwavering faith
Her caustic ways of sculpting souls took me years to understand

The leader of the band has died , just tired of growing old
But her blood runs through our instruments and her song is in our soul
Our lives will be a strong attempt to imitate her brand
We are a living legacy to the leader of our band
Her stubborn independence, she tried to help if you were down
Her crazy rhymes at odd times, Her style , her tinkling laugh
Her quirky sense of humour, mis-understood most times
You reached most people in a way one of a kind

I thank you for getting out there your peers mostly laid low
I thank you for the freedom when it came our time to go
I thank you for the pushing, all the times that you got tough
And darling, I do not think we said thank you near enough
The leader of the band has died , just tired of growing old
But her blood runs through our instruments and her song is in our soul
Our lives will be a vain attempt to imitate her brand
We are a living legacy to the leader of our band
