In Celebration of

Phillip Bruce Arthur

January 4, 2023

Bruce passed away peacefully on January 4, 2023 in Toronto from respiratory complications. Even though he suffered from type 1 diabetes, Bruce never let that or any other ailment deter him from leading an interesting and fulfilling life, first as a young man growing up in depression-era Alberta, followed by a long and distinguished international banking career with the Royal Bank of Canada throughout Latin America and the Caribbean before retiring in 1991. He will be remembered for his humour, compassion and selfless devotion to family, work and community.

Bruce is survived by his loving wife of 60 plus years, Nina; daughter Jill (h. David Miller) of Toronto; son Jack (w. Julia) of Vancouver; grandchildren Julia and Simon Miller of Toronto, Aiden and Anne Arthur of Vancouver; sisters Ruth Gibson of Hawaii, Mary Ohrn of Edmonton; and predeceased by brothers M.J (Bud) Boddy and Walter (w. Joan) Boddy and sister Joan Fonteyne (h. Darol). He also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, cousins and lifelong friends.

Visitation (2-3pm) and memorial service (3 pm) will be on Saturday, January 21, 2023 at Turner and Porter Yorke Chapel (2357 Bloor Street West, Toronto). Reception at home to follow.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Diabetes Canada.

I am very sad to hear the news. I remember when Bruce and Nina played bridge at the Swansea Town Hall on Friday afternoons. One winters day after a snow storm as they were leaving they got stuck in the back laneway. I invited them to my house for tea while we waited for Jill to come and get them. We did dig their big car out but it took a while. I would see Bruce walking along Bloor St in his wonderful large brimmed hat. I managed to arrange for a bench to be installed on the west on of High Park so he could sit along his route. My thoughts are with his family, he will be missed.

It has been a pleasure getting to know you and interacting with you over the years. You made sure you got to know the whole team that served your financial needs. It was impressive how you stayed involved and always wanted to stay informed. They don't build them like Bruce anymore and I have many memories I will keep.
