In Celebration of

Peter Turczyn

October 1, 1956 -  July 15, 2022

Born on October 1, 1956 in Toronto to Theresia Turczyn and Ilija Turczyn, Peter was the beloved husband of Natalia for 28 joyful and heartfelt years, cherished father of Dimitri and Maxim who he cared so much for throughout his entire life. He brought laughs and smiles to those around him as he himself always had a smile on his face. Peter was such a sweet and beautiful individual. He was a devoted family man and held the idea of family very strongly in his heart leaving behind family in Canada, Austria, and Ukraine. Peter regrettably passed away on Friday, July 15, 2022 at Brampton Civic Hospital at the age of 65 surrounded by his wife and children, after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer.

Peter was an outgoing and cheerful soul who enjoyed numerous sports whether this included venturing to Super Bowls with close friends in his days as a young adult, or playing soccer with his children, or going on hikes in his later years with his family. Similarly, Peter was a life-long concert-goer and fan of rock n’ roll music that stuck with him from his early years to his last few months having been to hundreds of concerts throughout his life. Peter’s admiration for family intertwined with his love for food and beer that saw him bring so much joy to the table whether he was at home or visiting family both here and abroad. Like his father, Peter had a deep appreciation for the outdoors. He enjoyed the peace and tranquility of nature by visiting and caring for his father’s cottage, going fishing with his friends, or taking his family on camping trips. He also admired travelling with his family, whether it was road trips to Pittsburgh, or abroad to see relatives in Austria and Ukraine, or spending intimate time on vacation with his wife in Cuba and the Bahamas.

Aside from family, Peter was extremely dedicated to his work, and served 33 years with the Metropolitan Toronto Police, loving every day so much he could hardly manage to take a sick day, even when he wasn't 100%. Over the years as a Court Officer he made countless friends and memories through his friendly, patient and easy-going nature, constantly bringing joy to the workplace. Since his passing, the family has been overwhelmed by the amount of support and condolences offered from his former co-workers, demonstrating how highly his work colleagues thought of him. Had he eventually retired, all who knew Peter would know that his final day of work would have been one of the hardest days of his life.

He will be sorely missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him; a loving husband, father, and friend gone too soon. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society in support of pancreatic cancer research.

There will be a visitation on Thursday July 21, from 2-4 p.m. and 6-9 p.m. Panahyda at 8:30 p.m. at the Turner & Porter Yorke Chapel, 2357 Bloor St. W. The Funeral Liturgy will take place at Ukrainian Catholic Church of the Holy Protection of the Mother of God, 30 Leeds St, Toronto, on Friday July 22, at 10:00 a.m. Interment to follow at Saint Volodymyr Cemetery.

So sad to hear of Peter's passing. He was such a truly kind man. As a lawyer he was always extremely helpful and gracious to me and with my clients. When I became a judge I was always happy to see him and have him in my courtroom. His passing is a real loss to the administration of justice and to the community here at Old City Hall.
