It is with deep sorrow that we announce the death of our beloved sister Pearl Calma Buenafe, who passed away on Friday, May 10, 2024, at Toronto Western Hospital. Pearl was born on October 29, 1945, in Tarlac, Philippines. She spent her childhood years in Manila, studied at the University of the Philippines and finally emigrated to Canada as an adult in 1970. She started her professional life as a banker, then became a federal government employee and finally a social worker in Toronto.
Pearl was a foodie and an exceptional home cook. She took great pleasure in feeding friends and family (and strangers) at every opportunity. She enjoyed learning new culinary techniques and exploring cuisines. Pearl also had an insatiable love for travel (12 times to Rome) and shared her passion with others by organizing pilgrimages to Europe and the Holy Land. She was curious about places and even more about people; she never missed the chance to connect with those around her. Pearl’s sense of exploration and travel dreams were with her until the end.
Pearl was fun, kind-hearted, loving, and generous. She adored all the young children in the family. With her young-at-heart spirit she always kept the children in mind and even organized her 70th birthday party at Chuck E. Cheese! It was a gift to those around her who could celebrate life this way.
Pearl marched to the beat of her own drum and leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and genuine care for all whom she met along the way. She laughed easily, talked to everyone, and had an infectious zest for life.
She is survived by siblings Popsie, Alex, Amor, and Carol (Nono); nieces Melissa, Carmina (Tim), Patricia (Clint), Christina, Jade, and Nikita; nephew Michael (Anna); great-nieces Taylor and Charlotte; great-nephews Theodore and Connor; and many other relatives and friends who cherished her company. Pearl was predeceased by her parents, Manuel Sr. and Cleofas, and brothers, Manuel Jr. (Kris) and Ramon.
Pearl’s family wishes to thank all the staff at St. Matthew’s Bracondale House who made her golden years enjoyable.
A private funeral service for the family will be held on Friday, May 17, 2024. A funeral mass and celebration of life will follow.
