Pat was born in Kelowna, B.C., the youngest of four children, to Donalda Trepanier and Philip J. Noonan. His early life was one of play and work, in town and on the mountain. He and his brother Phil were inseparable, curious, and usually in trouble! They worked in the orchards and the cannery, during the war, while the young men (including older brother Jack) were away. Sports were Pat's main interests: soccer, basketball, track and field, swimming. After graduation he had to delay university because of an accident, but began work in the mailroom of the Canadian Bank of Commerce in Saskatoon and ended up retiring as the Senior Vice President in charge of Credit for North, South, and Central America and the Caribbean for the Toronto Dominion Bank. During this time he also was part of starting the new Bank of Western Canada ... and closing it...at the first shareholders meeting! Another learning experience along the way.
The time in-between saw him working in Manitoba, Saskatchewan, back to Manitoba, then overseas to London, England. From there to Singapore and Hong Kong. After retirement he consulted on behalf of the World Bank for tertiary education funding in Jamaica, Kenya, Mexico, and Brazil.
Pat loved banking. He was as dedicated to the creation of an individualized financial plan for the young couple starting out as he was to working with international corporations, and even governments, on the
largest scale.
After retirement, Pat and Doris travelled extensively, this time for fun! Cruises around the Americas, Caribbean, Antarctica, Australia, and New Zealand, rivers in Europe and the St. Lawrence at home.
Pat loved people! He had a remarkable ability to remember people's names and details from the
conversation they had shared.
Pat loved family. He managed to keep relationships strong until dementia stole this from him. Pat had a little black book where he recorded dates for birthdays and life events for everyone in the large and growing extended family--- if you were a Noonan, a Lovestead, a Halstead, or a Hilgers, you were in "the book!"
Pat loved the outdoors. Especially the time spent "up north" puttering around, driving the tractor, sharpening chainsaws...oh, my, the chainsaws! (more time was spent on the cleaning, lubrication, and sharpening than on using them). Then there was the wildlife: the hummingbirds and deer he faithfully fed.
Pat's biggest love was Doris Lovestead, whom he married in Saskatoon, on August 20th, 1955. They immediately moved to Winnipeg, started their banking life and also a family. Pat and Doris have two daughters, Allison (Lyle) Halstead and Cheryl/Sheri (Lloyd) Hilgers who further gifted them with two sons-in-law, five grandchildren and two great grandchildren! They all grieve his loss, but the grieving has been long as Pat lived into his struggle with dementia and the changes it brought to his life.
Pat's life is both celebrated and mourned by his family: his wife Doris, daughters Allison and Sheri, sons- -in- law Lyle Halstead and Lloyd Hilgers, grandchildren Jennifer (Vaughan) Owens, Sara Halstead (Taylor Wallace), Duncan Halstead (Shilpa Rajagopalan), Brennan and Kendra Hilgers, and great grandchildren Asher and Eleanor Owens.
A Celebration of Pat’s life will be held at Turner & Porter Yorke Chapel (2357 Bloor St.W., Toronto) at 3 p.m. on Thursday, July 10, 2025 with visitation preceding at 2 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family would encourage you to donate to a cause you love.
