In Celebration of

Ona Gustainis MD, FRCPC

September 17, 1922 -  November 12, 2018

It is with sadness and great love that we announce Ona's passing. She was a dedicated wife to Jonas,
mother to Laima and Rima, grandmother to Vaiva and Linas (Blythe) and great-grandmother to Tomas and Erika.

Ona was born in Marijampole, Lithuania, and in time, chose to study medicine at the U of Vilnius. Forced to flee during the war, she continued her studies and received her degree in Insbruck, Austria. She emigrated to Canada in 1948 and eventually attended U. of Toronto, again receiving her medical degree, which was followed by a specialty in anesthesia. She was a member of the anesthesiology staff (for a long time, the only woman) at Scarborough General Hospital where she worked until retirement.

Ona was an active member of her parish and Lithuanian community. She was a member of the Lithuanian Catholic Women's League and served as president. She enjoyed skiing, and with Jonas and friends traversed the hills of many a resort in Canada and the U.S. Ona was clear in her principles and a model of discipline and dedication to live by them.

Visitation will be at Turner & Porter Yorke Chapel, 2357 Bloor St West, at Windermere, east of Jane subway, on Friday November 23 from 5-9 pm. A Funeral Mass will be held at Resurrection Parish (Lithuanian), 1 Resurrection Road, on Saturday November 24, 2018 at 10 am. Interment will follow at St. John's Cemetery.

Ona and her husband were close family friends with my parents especially during their later years. The friendship that they showed my father especially was so important to him and they shared many aspects of their life. I will never forget the beautiful way Ona said her last farewell to my dad as he was dying. She was so so grateful to him. "Ona, I never had a chance to thank you but now I will. Dearest Ona, thank you for your beautiful friendship to my parents, your openness and gentleness and wisdom that you shared with them and many others. It was always such a pleasure to meet you and sit and talk at parapijas's sale after my dad died. I have no doubt that there is a big party time going on in heaven welcoming you! With lots of fondness and love, Rita
