It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Nounia Eudoxie STRYCHALUK (nee JAREMCZUK) at her long-time home in Etobicoke on Monday December 23, 2024. Nounia was pre-deceased by her loving husband of 56 years Alex (2016) and youngest son Carl (2023). Nounia leaves behind her son Eric and daughter-in-law Sandra (Marleau), grandchildren Adam and wife Sarah, Max and partner Jenny, Quinn and partner Sam, Paige and partner Vinny and youngest Chase and partner Hailey.
Nounia was born on March 18, 1933 in Verbivchyk (Вербівчик), Lviv Oblast, Ukraine (then Tarnopol Voivodeship, Poland) the only child to her loving mother ANNA JAREMCZUK (1909-62) who single-handedly raised her daughter in France after they left Ukraine on one of the last trains out of Poland in late summer 1939. They settled in the small northern village of Forceville-en-Vimeu in the Somme where Nounia attended primary school, later moving to the St-Germain-des-Pres neighborhood of Paris in 1946 where she attended high school. Nounia worked at the Printempts department store through the '50's where she eventually rose to the position of Jewelry Manager and met the likes of Princess Grace and Edith Piaf. She and her mom spent most summer weekends at their cottage in the Normandy town of Trouville.
Nounia and Alex's parents were friends from adjacent villages in Ukraine (Стиборівка) and they knew one another since the early '50's. They were married at St-Volodymyr-the-Great church in Saint-Germain on July 29th, 1960, and emigrated to Toronto in the spring of 1961 where Alex had previously worked in the late 1950's. When they arrived in Toronto, they were fortunate to meet several couples who shared similar backgrounds and whom all remained friends over the decades to come: Boris and Linda Voytovitch, Theo and Helene Kolody, Florian and Caterina Colacou and Andre and Maurice Guillot. Nounia also leaves behind a very large and loving group of family in France on her Alex's side and a large family (mostly unknown) descended from her grandfather's side (JAREMCZUK) who emigrated to the eastern US between the wars.
The interment will take place at St-George's-on-the Hill cemetery at a date and time to be determined.
