Norma Isabelle Darling (née Trickey) passed away peacefully on September 17th, 2024, at New Horizons Tower Retirement Home in Toronto.
Norma was born on October 29, 1928, to Sarah Isabelle Trickey (née Brown) and George Trickey in Toronto. She was the youngest and last surviving of five children, Bruce and Arthur Trickey, Thelma Coon, and Lois Hancey.
Beloved wife to her husband of 57 years, Henry John Kenneth (Ken) Darling (1928-2010). Norma is survived by her devoted children Robert and Shirley Darling, her son-in-law Joe MacDonald, and her adoring granddaughter, Grace. Also, her cousin Marjorie Johnson, and the children of both her brothers Arthur and Bruce, and her sister Lois, as well as Ken’s cousins the Peters, all of whom she held in special regard.
Norma earned her Bachelor of Arts in Home Economics at UofT and later her teaching degree at the University of Alberta. She loved teaching and taught secondary school for many years, in Alberta, Quebec, and Ontario. Her love of art and teaching combined in her personal life where she spent much of her time teaching her granddaughter how to paint, sew, knit, garden, and cook. After retirement Norma enjoyed working on the Board of Directors at The Mansion Condo where she and Ken lived for 25 years. During that period, she was the head of many committees and was elected President of the Board numerous times.
Norma loved to travel, in her youth she travelled across Canada for work, and later as Ken’s career at Otis Elevator moved the family across the country. In retirement Norma and Ken travelled often. They visited Australia, Hawaii, the mainland U.S., the Caribbean, the UK and Europe. They were Snowbirds who spent many winters in either Orlando or Las Vegas with their friends and loved ones. Summers were spent relaxing and gardening at the family home in Ravenna, Ontario.
The family offers our heartfelt gratitude to the wonderful care staff at New Horizons Tower, all of whom brought joy and comfort to Norma throughout her stay on the Oasis floor. We will be forever grateful for the love Norma was shown, and the beautiful friendships she made.
