In Celebration of

Nick (Mykola) Oleksyshyn

May 2, 1920 -  May 17, 2017

Passed away peacefully at the Silverthorne Nursing Home in Mississauga in his 98th year. Nick was one of 8 children born in Ditkivtsi Ukraine and has survived all his siblings. He was predeceased by his loving wife Maria in January 2013, his spouse of 58 years. Nick leaves behind two sons, Bohdan (his wife Mariyka and daughter Sophia, husband Nicholas Kalimin) and son Myron along with close family friend Dennis Hobbs. Dad arrived in Canada from Germany following WWII started his new life in Canada at a lumber camp in Beardmore Ontario followed by relocation to Winnipeg where he opened a small grocery store. Eventually his journey took him to Windsor ON where he met and married Maria Stepash. Nick was a long time employee of the Windsor Salt Company from which he retired in 1981. During this time he operated a Ukrainian Handicraft Shop, bringing this culture to the community and actively engaged in basket making and ceramics as hobbies. All who knew Nick saw him as a historian, a traveller and someone who never took himself too seriously. Nick has been fortunate to be a resident at the Silverthorne Home and very much enjoyed his interaction with the staff and residents there. Lovingly remembered by all who knew him. Friends may call at the Turner & Porter “Neweduk-Erin Mills” Chapel, 1981 Dundas St. W., Mississauga (just east of Erin Mills Pkwy) on Friday from 2-4 & 6:30-8:30 p.m. Panakhyda 7:00 p.m. Divine Liturgy will be held at the St. Volodymyr Cultural Centre in the All Saints of Ukraine Chapel on Saturday, May 20, 2017 at 10:30 a.m. Interment to follow at St. Volodymyr Cemetery.
