In Celebration of

Milica Racic

June 27, 1929 -  July 25, 2019

Of Etobicoke passed away after a long illness at St. Joseph’s hospital in Toronto, Thursday July 25, 2019. Thank you to the doctors, nurses and staff at St. Joseph’s during this difficult period.

Milica is survived by her sons Danilo (Angelina) and Milinko ‘Mike’ (Melanie) and four grandchildren, Milos, Aleksandar ‘Sasa’, Filip and Luka. Also survived by brother Zarko (Eva) of Fonthill & sister-in-law Radojka of Serbia; many nieces, nephews, relatives, Kumovi & friends in Canada, Serbia and R. Srpska.

Predeceased by husband Milos (2013), ‘prija’ Jela Todorovic (2019), parents Mirko & Milica Petkovic, siblings Obrenija ‘Brena’ (Susa), Danica (Chuk), Danilo, and Dostinja ‘Doka’ (Vujinovic), and nephew Milos Vujinovic.
Milica was born in Brani Do (Trebinje), Hercegovina, R.S. in 1929. After the hardships of the Second World War the family moved to Vojvodina (Njegosevo). Milica came to Canada in 1958 to visit her sister, Danica Chuk, and then met and married Milos Racic of Toronto. She would say that Canada was a vacation and we were privileged to live here. Be thankful.

Milica was the quiet backbone of the family, always kind, supportive and helpful to all. Her words and clear, warm smile greeted all into their home. No one left her house hungry. Milica loved the outdoors, needlepoint and gardening, tending to her rose bushes. But more than anything, she loved her grandsons: “Grandma’s kitchen, kids eat free”. She inspired us all to be secure in our faith and steadfast in our character. Now it is up to us to carry on and honour her and what she has done for us.

Memory eternal. Vjecnaja pamjat.

What a lovely, warm and generous woman she was. When we became neighbors almost 20 years ago I was pregnant, just before your slava, and the first time we met she opened her home to us and invited us to this family celebration to make us feel welcome. Words cannot express how grateful I was for this welcome and to have her as a neighbor. And her generosity was evident in every interaction with those around her that I saw. She was special. Vjecnaja Pamjat.
