In Celebration of
Michael Robert Doody
July 12, 1949 -
April 23, 2023
Michael Robert Doody passed away peacefully at the Village of Humber Heights on Sunday, April 23, 2023, at the age of 73. Beloved husband of 46 years of Loraine. Cherished father of Shaun (Holly Loubert) and stepfather of Susan Thompson (Bill). Predeceased by his stepson Steven Hussey. Adoring grandfather of Amy, Jeffrey, Rowan, and Calla.
Michael will be dearly missed by his sisters Patty (Bill) and Kathleen (Alastair), his brothers Peter (Mary Ellen) and Brian (Diana), his brother-in-law Perry (Marian), and his many much-loved nieces and nephews. He will also be remembered fondly by his colleagues following his retirement in 2016 from a distinguished career of 37 years as a lawyer and general counsel with various entities related to the Globe & Mail and the Thomson family (including being appointed Thomson Newspapers’ first in-house counsel in 1979).
Michael was a man of many hobbies ranging from his lifelong passions for woodworking (he hand-built a grandfather clock, among dozens of other projects) and photography (making photo albums of his various trips occupied him for hours) to occasional interests such as stained glass making. He was also a member of the Ruskin Literary and Debating Society for almost 50 years and had recently received a lifetime Volunteer Service Award from the Province of Ontario in respect of this avocation.
Perhaps Michael’s favourite hobby was his love of travel. From his early years of solo travelling (his family still has a black-and-white photo of him kissing the Blarney stone), to many family vacations with his wife and young son (and camping with his son when they were both in Beavers, Cubs, and Scouts), through river cruises, safaris, and other trips with his wife in his later years, his love for travel (and the multitude of picture-taking opportunities it gave him) never left him.
Above all else, though, Michael loved his family. Remaining incredibly close with his siblings up to the very end, their visits with him in his last months of life were a testament to the bond they all shared and were a ray of light in an otherwise difficult time. Throughout his life family gatherings were joyous occasions (many still have the “Doody Family Reunion” t-shirts he had printed for one such reunion years ago) where parents, children, siblings, cousins, nieces, and nephews would all gather. When spending time with his son, stepdaughter, and grandchildren he was always the fun grandpa who was never happier than when he was able to make them laugh with his corny jokes. His strongest bond, of course, was with his wife Loraine who was by his side until the end.
Friends may call at the Turner & Porter Yorke Chapel, 2357 Bloor St. W., at Windermere, east of the Jane Subway, on Friday, May 5th from 12-1 p.m. with a Memorial Service to follow at 1 p.m. in the Chapel. Interment to follow for family at Park Lawn Cemetery.
For those who wish, in lieu of flowers donations may be made in Michael's memory to The Heart and Stroke Foundation or Diabetes Canada.
